Slap Bass Ive only just recently got into this style over the last year & I really like it. Its hard sometimes not to want to do it all the time & gets quite addictive.
I find its a little like bongo drumming, once you get a rhythm going, you cant stop! I have one thumb bigger than the other now lol Your thoughts on this track? God bless Lewis

Should be used in moderation. Sometimes people use the slap technique too much and it becomes gimmicky and tiresome (not saying you, Lewis, because I've only heard 2 of your songs and I like both). There are some songs that call for it, and others that might only call for it to accent a couple of beats or bass phrases within the song.
Lewis, do you like Jaco Pastorius? This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I love the slap bass sound and have been using it a lot in my own music recently except I use a sampler to produce the sound which isn't easy and I mainly use the sound to accent certain beats. I envy your ability to play like this. What's that funky guitar you're playing in this? I'm having a hard time getting a guitar sound like that. I like that organ also. The first song I wrote with more than one instrument is also called Funky One. Maybe I'll dig it out sometime soon and share it. Your song is cool.

I use slap bass on occasion. My friend Susannah is very fond of it also. She used the slap on a couple of songs we recorded recently. I played slap on songs recently called "Every1isSexy2Some1" and "Nissy Kahlain's Rebirth".

Great examples of Prince's well placed slap is "777-9311", and "Let's work".
If any others of you want to try to cop this style,i reccomend checking out a past issues of Bass Player Mag w/ Prince on the cover. It also has the tab for those songs and "Party Up", and "Le Grind" What bass do y'all play? I'm on a Japanese Fender Jazz.

Lewis-
I've said it before and I'll say it again. You're a kick ass musician! Love this bass track. I wonder where you'll be when your 29??!!? Oh yeah, Fender Squire (cheap-ass) through a Ampeg (is there anything else for bass?)

Don't let anyone stop you slappin!
Well if you're a reasonably accomplished bassist there is no harm in slapping as much as you want to Just don't let your other skills slip by the wayside... I realised that being a lead guitarist, I wanted to play a "lead bass" sound myself so I do prefer a bass heavy slapping popping funk sound. I'm not a BrownMark or whatever, just holding down a tight groove. No one beats Larry Graham when it comes to funk bass... not even Bootsy. I used to spend so much time practising GCS and Sly & the Family Stone tracks.
