How do you write? / What inspires you?

I write in a kind of wierd way.....I write by song titles. I can hear the perfect song titles when people talk or when im reading something....a certain phrase might stick out or something like that.

I wish i wrote from experience but maybe i need to be older to do that, lol

sometimes i cheat by trying to write my own versions of existing songs i think are cool or suit my style and chip away at them until they sound origional, lol

how do yall like to write?

I come up with great song titles too (they sound good to me anyway)

The rest of the song - that's the part I have the problem with. I don't think I'm too far off from Lenny-kind of talent - I can play a lot of stuff and I have a great ear. But DAMN am I at a loss with lyrics, and my singing's pretty mediocre too. I'm just trying to work with what I got.

I need some inspiration!

or

its really a phenomenon to me,
i cant force myself to write, and when i do i come up with shit,
Songs just come to me out of the blue, just jott down a whole bunch of words,
and then edit them out to fit a certain song im trying to create,
Sometimes i write songs to other songs, which is good and a bad thing,
its good because its easy inspiration its bad that you can disturb the creative process, and u notice that the song only sounds good with the arrangement to the song u wrote it too.
thats happen to me a few times,
When i do that, i use a technique joni mitchell does and alter the song completely different,
than at the ending break down, i have the song mimick the arrangement of the song i wrote it to,
as a nod to the person who inspired it,

my songs are very story-like,
i like to jott down premises,
and find obscure ways to express feelings,
i hate cliche love songs, so i try to make one without using the word love
or cheesy stuff,

When it comes to writing your hands are tied to your influences,
so its cool if you can steal a few techniques from them,
I stole the story song technique from Sting,
the writing to the tune of another song from joni,
and creating obtuse love songs from paul simon,

i suggest look to the people you admire, writing wise,
and study them,
and write the way you want,

traditional songs are suppose to have 2 to 3 verses, a bridge and a chorus,
i dont really follow that template i can have as much as 8 verses, no chorus, led zeppelin like song,
or a 1 verse 10 chorus, song
or just one line repeated
what ever you envision

the best song writer knows all the rules,
and breaks them when needed

Sometimes I use a real /fiction story as an inspiration, and rewrite it from a different point of view, coming up with new ideas in the course of writing. This should be great for lesser-experienced people and I'd like to do it more often now that I think of it biggrin

Most of the time I write when I'm bored (like in class), I usually hear or come up with interesting word combinations and try to build something around them. When I have more time I just scan through books and newspapers to find original headlines or expressions.

When I'm really lucky I write out of a special mood I'm in and the words come out by themselves, but you shouldn't rely on that.

My recommendation is to write as much as you can, this way it's more likely you can use some of the stuff later.
