What happened to the time-tested method of learning stuff from records (or nowadays, cds)?
As far as learning styles of famous players, I think learning licks from other players is an invaluable asset - it actually goes a long way toward discovering one's own style. Isn't that how one becomes versed in different techniques, styles? It helped me (and still does) to expand my horizons as a player to learn this player's approach and that player's approach to playing. I learned many lessons from deciphering Prince's (among others) playing. It's a rite of passage from players like Stevie Ray Vaughan on down to Hendrix, Clapton, et. al. Even someone as esteemed as Steve Lukather, for instance, picked Larry Carlton's brain when they toured/recorded together... There's so much knowledge to be gained by learning other's approaches to music. One doesn't have to be a note-for-note copycat, yet one doesn't have to plead ignorance in order to develop a "personal style". I guess it depends on what a person hopes to get out of music. Anyway, good luck... [Edited 10/17/06 22:21pm] My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

I don't doubt other peoples techniques are key to learning how to play your own way i myself took from Django, Muddy Waters, Slash, all the cats But i took a step furthur, by playing their songs my own way, difference between a copycat and an original guitarist I am a Rail Road, Track Abandoned

In a way, I feel u with the whole video thing - learning from records/books and relying/developing one's ear is the way a lot of us learned/still learn. Still, there were/are some great videos out there as well. Those Arlen Roth videos, with cats like Danny Gatton, were/are cool learning tools. As has been said, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". With time, though, and experience, one starts to realize one's own strengths, weaknesses, etc.
Now, if this person is gonna start a Prince tribute band, that's a whole other story... The one thing I don't get is the proliferation of videos on youtube where someone has just learned a few chords or parts of a song and posts it with the warning, "I just learned this, so don't be too cruel..." as someone said I will learn on my own thanks anyway! peace How has something gotten out of control? This has simply been a pretty good discussion about learning music and different approaches. If you're not adult enough to differentiate, maybe you should just leave the guitar and music alone... Or next time, don't ask the question if you don't want any answers My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

This website: http://www.e-chords.com has pretty good videos on learning other peoples music! it's one of the first websites I've come across in my learning process but they have no video on Prince. I understand learning by tabs and all that but I'm a see-it type person this is just another hobby to me not a job or profession Thanks all... now I'm off to get it on my own just like I mastered airbrush and Guitar making on my own I'll get it. P.S. Thanks JesseDezz for the motivation Peace all ain't that some shit, I can make a guitar but can't play one http://riccomn.tripod.commy site [Edited 10/19/06 13:10pm] love you baby but not like my guitar

i can understand what you mean, i am teaching myself guitar as well and i learn more in five minutes of watching someone do it than two days of reading out of a book....
i think the intent of the initial poster was not to copycat Prince, but just to learn some tips and tricks to aide in his quest to learn the guitar.

It's supposed to be fun among other things I guess nowadays, there are so many choices it's probably hard to know where to start. Good luck with your learning and your Prince get togethers (sounds like a lot of fun). Now, as far as a lot of Prince's funk stuff, there are funk guitar method books that are definitely a big help. Check out musiciansfriend.com or amazon. BeauHall (from this site) also has a website devoted to funk guitar basics and he keeps it fun. Good luck My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

I think videos is a great way to learn. Some of us, unfortunately, just don't have the musical ear to pick up licks and chords from the actual sound. And even though so many guitarists can do that, I still think that skill is a plus and not mandatory, and those who can't shouldn't be deemed a horrible guitar player because they need a little more to understand stuff (a little off topic). But in anycase, videos can help a person in many ways. From easier fingering patterns, to alternate chords we may not have known, and it's a great motivater to be playing the songs you like and listen to. In addition, playing someone else's music can develop your all-around playing as well. So yea that's my two cents....
P.S. check the link in my signature for an easy introduction into Prince music
