Hmm..ok, not really sure what questions to ask. Is it difficult to learn? What if someone has no musical background? Where do you find music for learning bass, as I have only seen music for guitar and piano? And yes, would be nice if anyone has one possibly for sale cool

It takes time to build up the strength in your fingers to play it properly but overall its not particulary difficult to get yourself to reasonable standard on the instrument ( most of the time you're only playing a note at a time rather than chords etc.). There are alot of free lessons online if you just type "bass guitar lessons" or something into a search engine. There are also lessons available on DVD etc. that are good for beginners, to get the technique right from the start. As for having no musical background...well, you've gotta start somewhere. I think a keyboard of some kind is a good for anyone learning any instrument...you can try things out on that and see how what you play on your instrument fits in with everything else....its not essential though, just helpful.

It depends on how old your son is. Building up strength to play even an nylonstring acoustic is pretty painful when you're 9 years old. So I imagnine a bass must be even harder. Other than that, it's a wonderful instrument and decent bass players aren't easy to find so chances of joining a band are good. (friends, poplularity, girls... smile wouldn't have made it through high school without playing an instrument!)

thanks everyone for your input! He is 14 years old, pretty big kid, 5'9. I think I am going to start looking around for a reasonably priced bass guitar for him. Any idea about what I should be spending for a decent used one? I don't wanna get ripped...LOL

Get a peavey Fury, you can find them on ebay for cheap, they are sturdy instruments, great tuners, great tone and most importantly they have a thin neck which will allow him to come to grips with the instrument more easily. yes, pun was intended
