Ok, my new "colours" instrumentals project is up...

http://www.myspace.com/mrdespues

Hello wonderful people, it's been a long while since I posted here, but I was wondering if you might kindly tell me what you think!

It's different to my usual work.. more noodley and experimental.

I have limited my song-names to certain colours, which reflect certain emotions... and worked around that. I often find limitations can bring about interesting ideas.

Some of the chord progressions are actually to songs I had intended to put vocals to, but I got a bit carried away with some of the solos and ended up enjoying the jammier aspect more, so left it at that!

I will comment on the work of those who comment on me, of course!

smile

hey dude, i don't like it. i usually try to keep my posts positive but these chord progressions and noodlings seem a little mindless and random. too experimental to the point of madness. sorry dude.

It is a bit noodly, but I do like the tones.

fair enough, you've commented negatively on my chord progressions before. other people have commented positively on them; that's fine.

it is totally self-indulgent. but i needed to get it out of my system so i could see what i came up with... if i had a real studio and a kit, i'm sure it'd be better, but i don't think it's too bad at all and i've received positive comments elsewhere... friends had been asking me to do this kind of thing for a while after i'd jammed at some parties, so i went ahead and did it.

it's nothing too serious, just jamming with myself, really!

Ok.. an update... I just deleted Green and Red. They were the most esoteric and crazy... I didn't really like them either.

I'm curious what all instruments are there... There's the sax, drum machine (is that a Linn drum machine? sounds very princey to me), acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass (is that a real bass or synth), and I can hear some keyboards...

I really like your sound...

How long did it take to lay down all the instruments?

both tracks took exactly 2 days each, which is usually the way it works for me.

all the instruments are live, except for the drums which is my own samples in fruityloops, not linn.

all the instruments you listed are there, as well as a "club salsa" egg shaker. wink (not to be underestimated!)

i use:

an ibanez "gio" bass.

a gibson "the paul II" les paul-style electric.

a yamaha professional alto saxophone

and a yamaha clavinova electronic piano (which has only 8 different instruments on it, but most of them sound good).

oh yeah, and the acoustic guitar is a very old Eko (made in Italy)... probably a collector's item, though it doesn't have the greatest tone.

my effects unit for guitar is a "zoom G2".

i use a small hardware mixer for all inputs, then direct to the line-in of the computer + acid pro 5 for multitracking and soundforge for mastering. sometimes use a couple of other programs for extra mastering if needed, but i'm not into overproducing as much as i used to be, so usually keep it simple.

smile

oh and for mics: shure sm57 (getting sick of this one though...not as versatile as everyone claims...) and a very cheap condenser which i actually prefer to the shure.

THANKS FOR YOUR COMPLIMENT!

Blue and pink sounds o.k. to me.....
be interesting to see what you would do in a "real studio"

I do like that "i'm not scared" listed as done by John Philips.... is that you too???
cool

yep that's all me too. i like that stuff better, really and i have a lot more of it, but this despues stuff is just another outlet.

and yes, i need to get into a studio, but this is all i can afford right now.

people have told me i would tear it up in there, but it's harder to do that at home with these limited tools.

Must admit I dont fully understand....
What limitswould be eliminated or lifted in a studio for you...

I should tell/warn you that I think fruityloops is a very
impressive and versatile program that gives me heaps of
entertainment... biggrin or I could just have ear wax buildup.... lol

ok first of all! i would have a drumkit at my disposal (i play drums too). that would make all of my songs sound a million times better.

secondly, top quality mics. i don't own any, except for the shure sm57, and you can do much better than that for a vocal mic (it's really meant for instruments and is more limited than people say).

thirdly, good hardware is ALWAYS preferable to software. i'm talking a huge mixing board as opposed to a CPU.

forthly, reel-to-reel. rolleyes sounds better than digital, any day.

fifthly, nice rooms and sound-proofing. i currently record in a basement and i am self-conscious of singing too loud cause of neighbours... my vocals are fine when i get in a comfortable environment, but currently, this is not a comfortable environment.

that about covers it, i think!

I like the intro with just the guitars. The mix of acoustic and electric sounds are nice too!
