I really like the drums on this track. I was wondering what it might sound like with some deeper toms and less of an electronic accent.

I appreciate your originality and your progressive approach. You have a great voice, which I especially liked during the softer parts. May I ask what kind of vocal chain you have (mic, preamp, compressor, etc).

You just keep churning out cool and original tunes.

May I ask what kind of vocal chain you have (mic, preamp, compressor, etc).


this track was recorded on 8 tracks of cassette using the tascam midi studio. i plugged my cheap rode mic into the back of it and sang straight onto the tape, rolled the bottom end out of the vocals when i eq'd them and added tops, then when i mixed the track off i sent the whole thing through a stereo effect.

cassette gives its own compression so i didnt need to use a compressor. when i work on digital i use a little.

One of the reasons I ask is because I think the vocals can be a bit edgy at times. I would maybe roll off deep from 40-50hz, cut a few booming frequencies with a high Q and then be very slight with top end boost. Honestly it's better to cut than to boost. I would also consider using a compressor, it will really help to smooth things out.

"it's a New Day"

my realisations are never smooth. they're edgy and free. if u consider what the song is saying, and that it is my expression of shaking off negativity, with a slight anxiousness, and self-contradiction, desperation in parts, the sonix of the song feel good to me.

i think it is important when recording, to make sure the sonix suit the actual song. there's more being said that what is being said lyrically. the sounds express as well.

mid-range organ at the start with harsh vocals.. creepin in with a hello! its a New Day. the understatement of the groove, the bass, the drums,... contrasted with harsh vocals, but not all, then comes the harp, just sitting where it wants to... i realise we're talking about eq, but i dont think it can b isolated , the eq has to reflect how i was feeling when i recorded it.

we tend to compare our sonix with the work of others. i dont believe in doing that. every persons expression is unique. there is no standard.

"say that ur in love with me now baby". desperation. bleeding edge. harsh. boost those tops. ouch. u get me? and the bass is sittin there, meandering along, cuz it knows its always been a new day and is sitting there laughing at me, eye-rolling at me like " oh yeah now u worked it out, its a new day ", the bass is busy being cool about it, and rather than have the vocals smooth like the rest of the track, why not go harsh with it? like " oh yeah well u mother fucker yeah i just realised it and yeah i always knew it but out of spite imma spit it out with my tongue poking out."

when im recording, i dont stop expressing after i've finished recording. i keep expressing when i mix. and on cassette, this lovely little thing happens that allows that expression to remain unique. the booming frequencies suit me just fine in this context.

but i do understand what ur saying and appreciate it, i just think it applies more to someone else's notion of what a song should 'sound' like, and not what the song actually iz, as an expression of my.self.
