My Cell Phone Symphony Last night I conducted the ever-anticipated cell phone symphony. It was insane. Wish I had pictures.
There were about 100 people in the audience. They drew each others phone numbers from a hat. I told them they were the orchestra. We played three movements. I. Allegretto brioso II. Adante III. Finale well, not really. It was kind of a comedy act. But they did build to a rather nice crescendo for the finale.

Very cool.

Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? - Stupify

I had really hoped to record it, but the cell phones weren't too loud. Then today i checked my messages on my cell phone and was like "4 messages?" Then I realized I had given someone my phone during the performance to play. In two of the messages I could hear the cell phone symphony going on and then spasms of laughter, and people talking including one woman frantically repeating, "Nobody's calling me! Nobody's calling me!" What a blast...

I never got past Chapter 3 or something because I got too busy working on the project! Which makes for a pretty successful book, if you ask me. Now that I need another project, I think I'll go back to it. The interesting thing is, this was unlike anything I had ever done before. I thought I was a filmmaker, but to get up and conduct an audience for some crazy avant-garde notion was really, really risky for me. I'm still amazed I took that path and how much fun and free-ing it felt. People were talking back and I was just improvising, letting it be all awkward and silly.

Isn't it great when you can flow with the moment like that? It's like being possessed and working from your core at the same time. By the way, I think I told you before, I read the whole book but didn't do any of the exercises, morning pages or artist dates... The concepts still get into you. It's great. I think it's time for me to pick it back up as well. I've been feeling stagnant and blocked lately.

You need to figure out a way to move your voice mails into an mp3. That alone has got to sound awesome.
Congratulations on taking a project/assignment in a book, (GREAT book btw) and seeing it through to such a great fruition. That's admirable on its own. Did you get any write-ups or ANY kind of recognition for being so crafty? www.beaurocks.com Trees are made of WOOD!

The show did get written up in the San Francisco Weekly paper as one of THE things to do on that Saturday night. It mostly focused on the theremin routine, which was also a blast. "Picking Up Vibrations" http://listings.sfweekly....-06&page=1 One of the strengths of the show was the clever programming of acts and the theme of "Incredibly Strange Music" so the audience somewhat knew what they were getting into. We played to a full house too.

I was looking for a review and came upon this:
http://video.google.com/v...1&q=phones Fifty people called cell phones in backpacks left at a bookstore. And check out the Suicide Improv video!

I mean, can you articulate the main concepts that helped you finish your songs?

I don't think it was anything in particular... all of it makes so much sense. I would say whatever strikes a chord with you would be what makes it work. The way she explains our patterns and where they come from, really flips your perspective around and that's what caused the breakthrough for me.

For me, I think a lot of it had to do with the ideas in the exercises like naming five alternative professions you could have chosen and then acting on one of them, or eating a favorite food from your childhood. Something about unlocking unused, hidden, special parts of yourself...even if it has nothing obviously to do with art...walking into new territories...opening doors to yourself...
