Newbie to Midi/Keyboards and Sampling

Hello Everyone,
-----

I need some direction with Midi/Keyboards and my Software. Please be patient as I am new to all of this, and may come across as very illiterate technically. I recently purchased a YPT-200 Yamaha Keyboard with Midi In/Out that i have connected to my Joystick Port in the back of my sound card (Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS). I am running Cubasis VST 4 and Fruity loops and Wave Lab Lite Audio Editing software on my PC. What I am trying to do is load a Wav File on to my Keyboard for manipulation. I have tried the the step by step recording MIDI guide and have spent 2 days surfing the net for some step by step instructions, and I am overwhelmed. How do I get sounds from my computer into my keyboard? If anyone is around to offer some advice i would greatly appreciate it.... do I even have all the required software? A friend of mine mentioned that I need a driver for my keyboard and that I could download it off of the manufacturers website, but I found nothing of the sort at yamaha. Can someone please help?

You won't be able to load a wav file onto your keyboard using the midi in out... You might be able to do with the usb port or scsi port, if these ports are there on your keyboard. Just to make sure, does the keyboard allow for editing of wav files etc?

I use a yamaha motif... for that I use a flash card to store the wav file from the computer... then I stick the flash card in the keyboard to load the wav file...

The manual for your keyboard is here: http://www.yamaha.com/yam...203_en.pdf

I don't see anything regarding editing wav files.

Thank you for your quick response. Is it possible to get any sound format from my computer onto the keyboard with the set up that I have? What kind of format/sounds can I use if so?

I don't know, I don't think so... I think the only type of files you can get onto your keyboard through the MIDI in/out is midi files... I might be wrong about this...

Midi files contain musical information (notes, rhythm, time signature etc...)... no audio data about the instrument sounds themselves (wav files).

You are going down the wrong path. Unless that keyboard is a sampler, you CANNOT load sound files of any type to it. Midi had NOTHING to do with sound files. You need to understand what MIDI is vs audio/sampling. 2 ENTIRELY different things.

sigh

Well, it's okay. And it's actually quite good that you admitted to your technical incompetence, because a lot of people would unfortunately be laughing at your expense otherwise now. I don't really know where you have originally gotten the idea of sounds being transportable from the computer to a modest (children's) keyboard like the Yamahas even in the first place? And what kind of manipulation are you exactly expecting the keyboard to perform for the sound samples you want?

There is no need to upload sounds to a keyboard however, so you're lucky. The sounds you want to use are called up from the computer by using the MIDI keyboard and dedicated software. However, learning to use those will take some time as well as understanding some basic technical facts.

It will take time. Read, read, read.
