Ideas for NEW songs my band should cover?

I can't seem to find anything that's new, popular, and danceable that we can add to our setlist. Help me out here! I can't rap like Kanye so don't even...

Screw today's music. It's all stealing from earlier styles anyhow. Pick obscure stuff, re-do it so it sounds just like something new, and bam, instant recognizability.

or

^^^ i second that

but i have heard of bands (rock bands in particular) when gigging they rework pop songs into rock or alternative form for gigging
that way it appeals to clubs and bars
I've even heard bands doing renditions of (dare i say this)
Justin Timberlakes - Cry Me a River...
lol eek

mmm but if ur lookin for covers,
today's music isn't the right place to look in my opinion
but if your up for the challenge...
you really wan't something danceable?

play "Its Raining Men"
i play it at gigs as a gag
but people really dig it...
go figure...

I want to hear you do "hollaback girl", but make it "hollaback jack".

People will recognise it right away. I don't know. It sounded fun in my head.

Funny you should say that because about 6 months ago I thought it would be funny to do that song. Of course, I would've made the drummer sing it. And I would like to add our own touches to whatever song we do, but I was just looking for something really NEW and easily recognizable to the younger folks. There's plenty of older songs that I'd like to do.

Gwen Stefani-Luxurious
Cindy Lauper-It's My life

Dude, I'm loving the HELL out of "Sugar We're Goin Down". It's a part of that new funk/metal/ska kind of movement... don't know if you guys could go that far into loud rawk, but you could turn the guitars down and make it MIGHTY funky.

I'm really hating that stuff. I DO really like stuff like that Gnarls Barkley song "Crazy" and the Arctic Monkeys "I Bet That You'd Look Good on the Dancefloor." I think "Gold Digger" would be funny. lol

Get that Crazy thing going and do it now. They're releasing their record in 4 weeks, so you'll be ahead of the curve. Do it. Excellent choice.
