My Old Band VS New Band - Whats YOUR advice 4 me?

Hello orger artists! biggrin

I have a dilemma. Well a mini dilemma. It isn't like a tragic personal thing, but it is an "artist/music" one of sorts. So I will call it a mini dilemma. You think you can you help me with it? If so please read on..

In 2002 I formed my dream band. We were all seniors in high school at that time. However, 2 of the members were best friends with each other. Well as bands in high school tend to do, I lost touch with both of them in late 2003. (However, the 2 best friends still stayed in contact with each other, cus well duh, they are best friends.) Anyways, I went on my "artist" ways. Well the 2 of them were best friends, and still saw each other from time to time.

Anyways recently I've been kind of half nostaglic for those times. I miss playing in that band and would like to maybe "reform" it and write some new songs with the 2 of them.

But another part of me wants to start a whole new band/project and say "Fuck the past.." I mean if I formed one band I was really proud of in 2002, why couldn't I do it in 2006, right?

I'm not sure which to pick to do. My friend has a saying that he always tells me, "You don't remember the bad shit with a memory, only the good." So maybe I'm remembering my old band with only the good and should move on to something new?

Or should I step back and try to make something new with people from my "music past?"

Anyone who can help with this..I'll give 10 Jason points to! cool

Thanks in advance...really! biggrin

You say "Anyways recently I've been kind of half nostaglic for those times". Is that really what it is? If so, it may seem that getting the guys back will also bring back the carefree high school days but it won't.

Now if you miss those times because you guys worked so well together, that's another story. If so, yes, look them up and see if they're in the same mind.

Either way, you have all grown. Wouldn't it at least be interesting to get together to see how this effects the band? Go in with an open mind towards that growth and give it a try. What harm could that do? You may have all grown in completely different directions and you clash on every level...but then it could be magic all over again...just older and wiser.

If that doesn't work out, start fresh.

I'm feeling nostalgic for my old band which I helped split up last summer. We sounded just killer (not my own opinion!), were great friends, had the best time. It was so much fun.

But I wanted out because we weren't making any progress and it was just a hard thing to do. It took many hours away from my family and we dead in the water artistically.

So while I wish we could reform, I remind myself "We broke up for a good reason". With that in mind I suggest you blaze some new paths with new people, explore some uncharted territory. And like Anon said, you and your old buds are really different people now. Maybe the music would be good if you hooked up, who knows. But for the sake of your growth as an artist, seek the new, baby.
