hey you've got some great ideas here..... I think your production is interesting but could do with a bit more polish.

your last track "the other guy" sounds more so, and I think this shows your potential. Was this done wiht a pro studio, or with someone else? whatever it was, you should do more of it!!

just my humble comments.

Co-Sign. You are getting better and I loved your stuff to begin with. Somehow I've never put the Alanis Morsett but better thought together with your stuff.

Is this still all you playing everything or something else?

Thx for sharing your growth here, it's awesome.

Hi Slave and Tal heart

Thank you 4 listening - glad you like The Other Guy

it was recorded around 7 years ago
a friend of mine did the music
then i wrote the song to the music and sang it

its funny cuz as much as i love that song
i prefer the stuff i have done on my own

i think sometimes we tend to like 'familiar sounding production'
over something raw and vulnerable
uninfluenced by 'today's ' production techniques

its more comfortable to listen to music that sounds like something else we heard or are used to hearing

i agree - The Other Guy is very open and ambient
but they are loops from other records already recorded

i did a similar thing with my version of 'round and round'
http://www.pbphonehome.com/round.mp3

its easy to make 'familiar sounding' music when ur using loops professionally recorded

i think all the other songs on this album are really just indicative of an uninfluenced over-all sound - an intimacy that can feel uncomfortable at first - but once i turn my mind off to 'what everyone else is doing' - i can listen to the album and really enjoy it - especially those songs back to back in that order

its a nice journey

thanks again heart

while this is true, and I quite agree that raw sounding tracks can often sound the best, like the neptunes for instance, breaking the mold and creating the new trends in commercial tracks instead of just mimmicking them.

Without trying to be mean, when i said I thought the production on your tracks needed more polish what I kinda meant was that some of the sounds sounded a bit like they'd come stright out of the box, and infact they felt lacking in uniqueness and could have benefitted from some more of your cool production styles.

I think unfortunately we've become used to bass drums sounding fat and bassy, and like wise bass lines, that's what gets us moving. But that still leaves a lot of scope for production. You should be commended for not taking the easy way out and using preproduced loops, that's something I avoid like the plague, but it does make the journey to producing something more sonicly pleasing a little harder.

I guess the holy grail is to produce something that sounds familar, but at the same time is truly ground breaking.

Hi Bewdy - thanks for your further explanation heart

'ground breaking' is an interesting term .

someone sent me this message a little while ago - seems to relate .

" send me a female single mother who writes, records and performs her own work , dripping with hooks and a spiritual message , making old sounds new again via her sheer purity of spirit as she laces funk with pop and pop with mozart, has a vocal range from planet fuck and a natural ability to harmonise uniquely with astounding precision, creating a tapestry of sound that makes you think of Michael Jackson and Prince in one body but fresher and more fertile , who can complete hits in any other language in less than 5 hours without flaw , and who isnt famous - and i'll tell you she needs to work on it .

but if you send me the same woman and she's famous - i will call her ground-breaking "

I had to laugh! heart

PB, I was not taking anything away from your other great songs you have produced. I was merely adding that it did stands out from your other songs because of the difference in production qualities. All of your songs have merit in their own unique way. Keep up the good work.

thanks Kelly !

i combined a straight beat with a swing beat - which i thought was really interesting .

creates a weird tension - but when Mary Comes it releases .

" white linen and a border-lit smile
she gotcha and u never hurt her child
one minute in a better-lit day
she's comin for the father that you are "

glad u liked it !
