any band directors/leaders out there? so how do you deal with guys who don't take instruction very well?
i just started leading this band recently (first ever) and the guys are all guys who play instruments cuz they love it but it's not their long term goal for life. they are competent but some of them are unruly and have a hard time shutting up when i ask them to stop playing and i am trying explain something to someeone. plus there's a music teacher who plays congas and doubles on keys a bit. he likes to be forceful sometimes and i'm finding it hard to keep these guys in check so to speak. anyone have any advice trying to keep in line?

most often times it is the maturity level of those you are dealing with. when I was in my teens and twenties, people were very unruly to deal with. now that I'm well seasoned, people respect what I know as a musician and they cut off as requested. also, the guys in my band are all older than me except the bass player. I think that their maturity is the issue. [Edited 11/9/05 15:56pm]
