Yay! I got 2 gigs this weekend! Indian Music!

I will be singing with The Temple Bhajan Band. Check them out! www.templebhajanband.com . I'm so excited! This is what I've wanted to do ever since I went to the chanting workshop in May. http://www.prince.org/msg/15/145685

Since then I went to see Jai Uttal in Berkeley in June and this past weekend in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. They remembered me and it was great to see them again.

The Temple Bhajan Band is my second favorite Kirtan group! I got an email from them through tribe.net. Hopefully I'll be going up to LA once a month to perform with them... they said they have a gig in Palm Springs for New Years! This weekend I'm just singing backup, but eventually I'm going to lead a few songs, play percussion and even play my synth!

Vina, that is the hippest gig around. I love indian music. It has such beautiful intricate melodies and very challenging rhythms. What a great learning experience for you! You go girl! You'll have to tells all about it after your performance.
You may want to check out Indian master musician and percussionist Trilok Gurtu. He is one of my favorite contemporary players on the scene. He done alot of work with John McLaughlin. http://www.trilokgurtu.net/

That's fabulous!!! Yay! yay!

Vina, Guess what? I might be moving to Berkeley just down the street from Ashkenaz. I'm going to apply for a little cottage there this morning. There about about 5 sari shops within a block, and it's across the street from a folk music club.

crossing my fingers I get it. pray This housing market is HELL!

I'm sooooo jealous! I want to live in Berkeley. Guess what? Jai is coming back to Ashkenaz in December. I want to go up again. When we stayed there, we were a few blocks away from Ashkenaz and I remember driving around and seeing all the Indian shops. We bought our first saris there! Good luck with the cottage! Maybe I'll see you in December.

Vina, it looks like I got the cottage in Berkeley! yay! I sign the lease on Friday. It'd be nice to see you and Brande again if you come up in December. I'd say you could crash at my place but I'm afraid it's tiny. We're talking m-i-n-i-s-c-u-l-e. I must forego many of my possessions in order to fit in there. Great location, though! thumbs up!

So we had a great weekend. It was awesome to finally meet them and to sing with them was almost surreal. There were a few moments I looked around and thought... Wow, I can't believe I'm part of this! I really, really wanted a group like this and now I'm in one! It's not about the money, but I got paid, which was cool. There will be plenty of unpaid gigs later on. We are going to Palm Springs in December! I'll be doing at least one show a month with them in LA and any show they do in San Diego.

I'm going to ask Jai Uttal if he would like an opening act for his show in December. wink We'll see how that goes. I would love to go to Berkeley again.

I'll take some pics at our show on the 5th, then you guys can see me in my sari. batting eyes So many people asked me if I was Indian. I met the cutest, sweetest old Indian lady. She was adorable. I gave her a hug and said you are so sweet and beautiful and she said "Oh... you too". She said we did a good job. I'm so in with the Indian peeps, lol.
