THE NFO

Org musicians:

Since the NFO basically consists of the most prolific members of the org musician's forum, you guys outta just make your band name “The New Funk Order” and have this simultaneously as the musical movement that the founder initially called for. Kind of like how the P-Funk All Stars do it. Everyone has their own thing, but all come together on the NFO projects. This would make things a bit more organized- I believe that you guys need a bit more organization and a method- if you had that, you could pump out projects fast and productive.

Just my two pennies.

Any thoughts?

I understand art. I am an artist.

What I do not understand is the lack of the “will of cooperation” and the lack of complete acceptance into the organization. I understand that a quality product is always a plus, but who defines “quality” when it comes to art? To a child, a smudge on a piece of paper can be cherished by the child as their prize creation. To an adult, the work that they complete on their job, no matter how bland to someone else, could be one person's drive and art in life.

Such is with music. I don't always like what I hear. In fact, I really do not understand country music and many other types of music. But, I understand the need for the musical expression by the artist. You reflect what you know and love. If you love God, you reflect God. If you are a violent person, you reflect violence in some manner. If you love your history and your surroundings, you reflect those things in your art. So, in that way, I do understand why people make country music, but I am just not personally attracted by the sound- it doesn't mean that I don't accept it.

The same is with music that some say lacks quality of writing, quality of sound, or quality of voice. Some people criticize other people's voice in songs. Look at the Violent Femmes. Gordon Gano doesn't exactly sound beautiful to a music snob. Gordon's rarely on key, but many hail him as a genius.

All I am trying to say is that if you allow for more music, you will have more music. If you restrain the spirit, the music will not flow. But, a deadline doesn't have to mean restraint. If you set deadlines for projects, simply let them in on the next project. I understand that there is limited room on a CD. Let them in on the next one! Try to allow everyone to participate regardless of what your opinions on quality are. The goal of the NFO, as I read in the founder's bio, is to provide an outlet for underground artists to make a statement against the “system” in place in this world of negativity. Let them through! Let the artists express theirselves! I know there are also lines of censorship that shouldn't be crossed- we all know that there are certain things that are universally negative and hateful. Those things shouldn't be tolerated anywhere. For the biggest part, artists who have respect for theirselves and their art do not portray those negative things in their artwork. A bad word here and there isn't wrong. Nudity isn't wrong, it's just not widely accepted as correct. Being nude doesn't mean being lustful.

I remember when Project 1 came out. The project came together very fast. I mean REAL fast. And, in my opinion, it is still the best of all of them. I was in watch mode then as you all came together. The best stuff comes out when people are motivated behind a cause of true freedom. The NFO isn't just a music community, it's a freedom MOVEMENT. The NFO shouldn't be focused on trying to appeal to the mainstream, nor should it be focused on trying to sell items. Making some bucks on the side is cool, but people's art should never be rejected because of opinion- the law, yes- opinion, no. And as far as I know, a designated level of sound quality is not the law.

Go with the flow like Project 1, and I bet you that the juices flow more naturally.

I'm not sure where you are coming from, SexyPeach. You sound like you think the New Funk Order is restraining artists in some way by not starting a new project... We are all free to release whatever we want at any time. There are a few other compilations going on right now on this board so to introduce another NFO project might be overload.

Also, it takes time and energy to put it all together. The artists just give a song up, but somebody has to create artwork and spend time on the website uploading and downloading songs, deciding the tracklist, etc.

You also sound like you don't approve of selling cds. All the work that goes into making the project presentable takes time and money that should be reimbursed/compensated if possible. We all have day jobs and participate in whatever way we can. If you want a perfect project, then create your own. You might find that it's easier said than done to make it work.

As far as compilations are concerned, there are plenty to go around, I know. But they aren't NFO Projects. There are individual projects that the NFO guy does, like J'Shua, PilotBeacon, and Dreamfirstborn, and I know about the Quest CD. I'm talking about the entire group, being as free as it was in Project 1.

And, as fas as I can remember, it didn't take a whole lot of organization to get Project 1 pumping. Yes, you had a volunteer to design a really cool website for you. That is always a plus. But, it wasn't needed. Therefore, to say that there is plenty of "work that goes into making the project presentable takes time and money that should be reimbursed/compensated if possible" is only relative if it had been needed in the first place. You all had/have a soundclick page and even had a volunteer contribute a free fan site (if I remember right). The point of it all was to jam and have fun(k). That point was somewhat quieted at one point or another. I know it's hard to start an organization. It doesn't have to be. But hey, if someone believes in the community that much to invest their time and effort to make it look good, then that is an awesome thing. That doesn't mean that anyone should be excluded because someone thinks there is "lesser" quality involved. There is no "lesser" in an artistic community.

Money? Sure. I don't mind money. As long as it is shared equally. I'm a hippie like that. Commie if you will. That's what attracted me to the NFO because it was founded on the principles of a social "commune" so to speak. Just keep it real and help everyone in the Projects.

I guess I am really just wanting more and more people to get involved and interested because I too believe in the NFO, and I want everyone, regardless of their music quality, to be able to have this opportunity.

I don't understand.
Who and when was anyone excluded from an NFO project? I've been on since day one and I have never seen that. Not once.

The NFO always makes music/projects/ideas available as they are given it. Those side projects came about because people asked for some help from the NFO individually. There was never any invite to those. You make it sound like it's playing favorites or something.

The NFO has never said no to ANYONE. EVER.

Are you looking for an excuse for the lack of movement lately? The hard part is keeping people excited about it from what I see. People are looking for exposure to a broader audience plain and simple and perhaps if they didn't see it instantly or what they expected from the NFO, perhaps they moved on. I've never seen anyone not willing to share their music. Grace posted a free for all project and everyone jumped on board. I have no idea where that went. Maybe it was because someone still has to put it all together. I honestly don't know.

Project IV (LIVE) has been ready for submissions for quite some time but there has only been a few submissions.

And money?
Please. A handfull of CD's sold so far at a buck (profit) is nothing to complain about. The idea behind selling any of that was giving a method that if someone had dial-up or just too lazy to download or just wanted something that looked and felt "complete". Where does that buck go? The shop costs 6 bucks a month for the premium service. That way you can have more than one CD. Still comes out of someone else's pocket at the end of the month so uh ... your welcome?

Vina has the admin information on that and can vouch for any dollar amount that has been made to date. From what I understand, the plan has never changed to distribute any "real dollars" if they are ever to be made. The fact is, the key people involved just don't have ALL THAT TIME to spend on the internet all day.

Yeah, I don't understand what SexyPeach's beef is either. Hey SP, why don't you orgnote/contact each individual who ever participated and/or showed interest in NFO projects and get them pumped. I think you might get tired of that real quick. Personally, my life isn't going to fall apart if the NFO has run it's course. If you're so into it, then do your part to promote and get other people involved. Stop complaining and do something. As far as I know, you have never contributed anything to the NFO: No music, no time, no nothing. I'm baffled by your extreme disapointment.

Hey guys, don't take me wrong. I love the NFO and I really like what you guys do. I was just concerned because I have seen some people be really stand-offish when Joe Cracklesound posts a music link. Not you guys who posted though. You guys have been very nice from the beginning. Anyway, I am too polite to go into all of that. I am just glad to be a part of the artist's community. And yamomma, thank you. I mean that. I hope to see you all on Project 4. I will be submitting and helping with it.

Sexy, I assure you that I have never refused anyone on a project. Someone once submitted something to me with nudity and I actually approved of it, but one of my counterparts, Grace, felt that it wouldn't be a good thing (I gave her hell about it).

I am glad that you are so defensive of the NFO, but please, don't be upset with anyone. We are here to help, I promise!

Peace,
Jason
