Hi Guys I have a query and looking for your opinion,

I have often heard that Prince likes running 2 distortion/over drive pedals at one time.

1. What advantages would you gain by doing this,

2. What configuration would you have on e.g. running a Boss Mt2 & Blues Driver? Wouldn't you get too much feedback and hissing?

Any comments would be great!

Consider using one as a volume boost pedal. So, you wouldn't set them BOTH up as you normally would. Pick one as your main distortion pedal for the heavier songs that require punch on the rhythm parts. Then pick the other as the boost during solos, so you would only add a little more distorion, boost the volume up, and run it AFTER the main distortion pedal. If you run it before the main distortion pedal, yeah, you're more likely to just get more feedback, because most distortion pedals also compress the signal, so there's very little change in the volume, (which is why most people put the wah pedal before the distortion pedal).

THEN, you can also use that boost pedal on your clean playing to just add a little bit more edge to the playing when you want a clean tone that's going to cut through for the solo.

I used the Boss TD2 or DS2 or whatever pedal Prince used for awhile - where you have one distortion pedal with a "remote" jack, which would give that pedal a turbo boost (hey I'm quoting them here...) it worked okay, but i really didn't dig the distortion tone so much... it was too much distortion for me.

So to recap - 1 distortion pedal is the boost, the other is the plain old distortion. In your case, it depends on the music you're going to play. Are you going to get Metallica heavy? Then use the Blues Driver as the boost and the other one as your basic distortion pedal.

I too like the distortion from this era, if someone can correct me isn't Prince using alot of compression with the distortion during this period??

There's so much one can learn from these forums - posts by actual working musicians like BeauHall, for instance. This (the sharing of experiences/opinions/ideas)is one of the true powers of the Internet.

One of the characteristics of Prince's solos during that time is the heavy compression and constant use of delays. I'd almost say, get you a cheesy distortion pedal, a guitar with a humbucker, and a delay pedal, and, Bob's yer uncle, you're there.

i do it all the time...boss super distortion and a boss overdrive
the overdrive fro more mellow blusey stuff...the super distortion for more rocked out stuff...and both for hendrix feedback killer sustain leads
