Throw a Cover Song on your CD: $$$$

http://cdbaby.org/stories...31484.html

I read an article last night in Music Connection magazine, an L.A. music industry mag, almost useless unless you live there, except for little tidbits like this.

There's a short article in there by the founder of CD baby. He said that digital sales are through the roof on records that include a popular cover. Why? People are searching iTunes or Rhapsody or whatever for their favorite old song, find the cover by accident, preview it out of curiosity, and dig it, buy it, and then check out the rest of your record.

So, look for I Would Die 4 U on the CD now. That's for damn sure. I dunno if I'll use the current version or totally re-record it. I think I'll just add what I've already got, make it the "special bonus track" or something.

But anyhow. That's something to consider when putting together your CD. I initially thought about adding "Life Can Be So Nice" to the CD, but never got in contact with the publishing rights people. I'm hoping to have more success with IWD4U and get it on the CD. While the track may not sound exactly like the other tracks on the CD, it definitely leans in the same direction.

Anyhow. So, there you go. Cover versions can be your friend. Just be sure to get the rights covered before you get more publicity from the lawsuit than the record reviews.

On a side note - CD baby has some awesome articles on getting your music out there. The owner seems to have a sixth sense about marketing ideas for your music.

Just kicking up some help around here.

Flashpointe

A couple of years ago, I did that cover of "Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)", and it did pretty well on the soundclick charts. It still charts from time to time. I added it to one of my cd's as well, as a hidden track, and I encoded it as a protected mp3 only on the disc, so people can't copy it. I did that because I didn't think that Prince would be happy about it if I let it be downloaded or copied.
