What Is Your Dream? It's time to get it on the table. Tell us what your heart's desire is and be brave. And be honest. Do you want to be a rock star? Admit it here now.
My dream is to write and direct an independent feature film. One of those subtle, European-inflected types. I know it's shameful, but it's true and I'm working on finishing my script.

i was just thinking about "dreams" last night ... and how they change ... or alter ... over time ...
the reason i thought about it --- a friend had a pc of land for sale --- and i thought it would be a cool piece to do something with --- so for about a week now ... i thought ... hmmm.. if i get this land ... and do this and this ... i can have a piece worth $$$$$ --- last night the whole thing kinda fell thru .... --- so .... thats what made me think of that ... i do applaud ya for sharing your dream ... i think "directing" or "writing" is one of those dreams that many people have .... i think "entertainment" is so prevalent in the US .... hell, we stay up to see what Tom Cruise says at the Academy Awards , etc ... i have too done some writing ... on really "basic " like scripts .... and i think many have ... about 5 years ago--- one of my best "high school " friends wrote a script and sent me a copy ... i loved reading it ... (never got published -yet that i know ...)

One reason I've felt so ashamed to admit this dream to myself and others is its seems so unoriginal. Doesn't everyone have a movie they want to make? Oh well, fuck it. I still want to do it. And it's not like it's totally off base considering I have a graduate degree in film production and have made several shorts.

its better for someone like you --- who has a degree in a related field and has already done some of that work !!!
congrats !!! ... i remember "dreaming" about this ... years ago ... and reading something about how "writing is a verb" ... and you actually have to put pen to paper to perfect your craft ... not just count the dreams in your head ... etc ...

Are you going to need music for that? That's one of my dreams... to complete a movie score. What else? Finish an album... Get a band together... I'd like the usual suspects... drums, guitar, bass, synth, piano, plus tablas, harmonium, saxophone (alto or tenor), trumpet, clarinet and a harpsichord. Why not?

Sure, I'll need music for the film, so when I'm in post-production, I'll give you call. Maybe Girish (tabla player) could play in your band or help with a recording at least. And I play violin, a little piano, not to mention autoharp if you need a hand in those areas.

My dream is to continue with my music education (Fall semester starts 9/1/05), be able to express the music that I'm hearing in a written format (on a staff), put together a band of older, experienced musicians (jobbers, or people that play for money and don't want creative control), practice and record, get a regular slot at a local venue

Sigh! My ultimate dream is to be able to make the music I want to make and make good money for doing it. Part of me wants to be a big rock star but I would be just as happy if that weren't the case.

Physically, here on Earth, to be able to not have to worry about when the next bill is paid, and have enough financial wealth to achieve such results.
Having the guarantee of safety, health, and happiness for me, my family, and my friends all over the world. That is what I would say is my dream. I think that is what most everyone wants. Spiritually, I want to be with God and Jesus Christ in Their coming Kingdom-when the time comes. [Edited 6/23/05 11:00am]

Affirmations with a plan is the way to accomplish ANYTHING you set your mind to. And it looks like you have a well-etched plan and vision for getting there. I heard an expert in such things say that if you write down your dreams and then simply read them over before you go to bed every night and when you wake up every morning, you're twice as likely to achieve them.

Dream update:
Shortly after I started this post, I offered to volunteer to work at a conference for film financing that will have panels and luncheons specifically for people interested in financing feature film, producers, motion picture business people. I thought, well one of the things I'll need is money, so why not get my feet a little wet and hear what these people talk about and what they look like? Then they said they didn't need volunteers but could give me a student rate. When I told them I couldn't afford it, they offered to let me go for free this year and next year, if I promise to volunteer next year! (the conference costs $200 to attend) magic

Wow that's awesome Pilot! It's that first step that holds so many folks back I think. Most folks would think, "make a movie. right. well, I have my camcorder..." and instead it looks like you've created a roadmap and are applying yourself logically, in small steps. That's just amazing.
My dream is to hear 50,000 people singing my song back to me. Think Prince doing "Take Me With You" where he stopped singing and the whole audience sings instead... or I once heard a live Tom Petty tune - "Breakdown" - where he sang the first line and then shut up, and the whole place sang it back to him, all the way through the song. Peter Gabriel joked that when he plays live, if he forgets the words to a song, he just reads the lips of the people in the front row. THAT is what I want. Don't want money, don't care if they know my name or not. www.beaurocks.com Trees are made of WOOD!

I've been thinking about this dream for years and then a couple of weeks ago, I just embraced my dream and committed to it. Now I have all kinds of ideas to move it forward. I've been reading biographies of my favorite filmmakers and feel this mountain of energy in me that wants to EXPLODE!!! THAT is what I want. Don't want money, don't care if they know my name or not. That's possible. Your dream reminds me of this guy in a plaid shirt and jeans who opened for Tori Amos a few months ago. His name was Matt somebody. Anyway, this unknown dude with a guitar and no band connected with the audience by telling good jokes and playing good songs and then he ended off the set by teaching us a couple lines from a song. Then the interesting thing was when it was our cue to sing, he sang a different part, different words and melody alongside the audience. So it was like this gargantuan duet with him and thousands of people.

My "dream" would be the freedom financially to have all the instruments and equipment at my fingertips, to express as effortlessly/passionately any Musical inspiration that came to me, in an instant.
Plus a Japanese guitar technician, like Prince has... ~PClinuxOS~ I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... I drop in from time to time, ...

Styles said: heartbeatocean said: Oh...well...that one's easy!!! is it? jshua Sure, I think so. We work with a lot of composers. There are two things going on that I know of. 1) in consultation with the conductor, selecting standard punk rock classics and arranging them for an orchestra with vocals. Some of our arrangers are less experienced, which usually comes out in boring sectional parts, but we still play them. Remember that it is punk, so precision and subtle nuance is not a priority. and 2) writing original material for "orchestral punk", whatever that means. This category is just beginning to be explored and is not really defined. The idea is to stretch our material beyond covers, so that we're not simply a cover band but offering something new. We actually received a grant for composers to do this (a tiny $100 will be offered per composition) and the last I heard, we were having trouble getting composers on board for the project. To write something that is a cross between classical and punk is an exciting endeavor. One idea is to take a classical piece and deconstruct it and make it punk or punk-influenced. For example, our conductor (who does a lot of the arrangements) is taking Pachelbel's Canon (classical wedding repertoire) and distorting it, smashing it, punking it out while still retaining a modicum of recognizability. I wish I knew something about composition, because I could have a field day with this. We also have some arrangements for string quintets and flute trios, which may be a simpler ambition.
