Interesting and hopeful. I guess there's a documentary film about a school of rock (not the Jack Black film) and the young talent is just puring out into the world. Hope indeed.

Actually, Joshua was accepted into the Berklee in L.A. Summer Performance Program (http://www.berklee.edu/summer/la.html) even thought the minimum age is 15. He's that good.

He was telling me that there were all kinds of youngsters there who are incredible musicians.
Young ones on all instruments that are able to jam on Giant Steps like it was Mary Had A Little Lamb.
It did my heart good to hear that.

I saw Rock School tonight and it was ok, but Audience you might be impressed with this guitar-playing kid CJ in it, who in his own words, "wants to be a legend". He does sound pretty amazing.

I saw another preview that showed this teacher being pretty degrading to these kids and I thought "Who the hell is this guy and why is he the authority on Rock?" much less why is being such a prick to these little kids who just want to rock.

I don't know, maybe I'm reading to much into the preview but it kinda turned my stomache

The movie is kinda wierd. I felt like it was a big long fundraiser reel for the school. A lot of attention is put on the antics of the teacher/founder. It portrays him as an excellent, but tough teacher with really high expectations. Also an egomaniac. The thing is, it does take a lot of discipline to learn an instrument well and kids like being pushed or they'll slack off.

I have mixed feelings about it because my violin teacher was a total hardass blackeye and most of my childhood was spent dreading lessons, but she did make me into an accomplished player with impeccable technique. Although I do wonder if some positive motivation (as opposed to motivation through fear) would have perhaps made me an even better player. Or maybe I would have never gotten anywhere.

But I still hold a lot of fear and shame around my playing, especially because I can't improvise or play anything other than classical music. square I tend to underestimate myself and basically quake to the bone if I have to do anything on the fly without having rehearsed it for hours and hours. But give me a concerto and a few months and I can solo with an orchestra behind me. But then again, it all felt so rigid that I gave up playing for 12 years. Not just playing but ALL MUSIC, listening and playing.

That's how messed up in the head I got about music. wilted And that's why being a member of the Punk Rock Orchestra is so healing for me. rainbo
