7 Days In The Studio.

Tonight, I went in to finish up the guitars. Started with a couple of acoustic parts in some tunes, (She's Too Rich is one) and ... well, I dunno if the sound was what I'd wanted in the song. Maybe I'll mix it way in the back, like something you dont actually HEAR in the song as much as FEEL.

And then I went to do some electric guitar parts. They had a strat, I had my Deluxe Reverb, ran it through a univibe and my tube screamer AND OH MY GOD I SOUNDED LIKE HENDRIX. For a humble collection of instruments, they made me sound amazing. The tune is this 7/8 number that initially had a Soundgarden feel, but now, wow, it's some sort of Voodoo Chile thing in freaky time.

And then, back in the control room after hearing the awesome tone, I asked if I could go back and re-do the guitar on Oh Face.

And holy crap, that song will make me a millionaire.

Okay, to be fair, it's late, and I've had some medicine and I'm feeling dandy. And exhausted. But seriously, holy macWow, they had my song pumping at top volume through these huge monitors - and I've done something like 10 harmonies behind Oh Face, and the drums - when you hear these drums, you will ask for the tracks so you can create some loops. I'm killing myself at how egotistical I sound right now, but honest, this stuff is just kicking my own ass.

So anyhoo. They're pumping 40000 watts through this sound system and the guitar that I laid into this song is just explosive and raw - like lightning in your hands or something - it's the tone I think I've always wanted in a song - ANY song, and wow, I found this tone tonight and they managed to capture it beautifully - which is an amazing feat in and of itself if you know anything about studio recording practices and guitar amps. Honestly - the guitar tone you hear on CDs - it's NEVER what the person sounds like if you're standing next to them, Yamomma will back me up on this - the mics just dont capture that kick to the groin and punch in the chest of a seriously loud bottom heavy guitar amp.

And yet, I feel like I've been punched in the chest and kicked in the groin, and well, hey, I REALLY liked it.

Man I gotta ease up on the wine.

So, hopefully I'll have some mixes later this week - I wont post anything publicly - suddenly I'm really stingy about my recordings, but maybe I'll post sumpm - I dunno. I want to share it but I don't want to hear any feedback right now - I want this to be wrapped up in a coccoon of stink before I bring it out. But when you hear it, hopefully you'll remember the stuff I'm talking about right now, and think, "oh wow, that IS the sound of electricity in your hands". Or whatever. Just lie to me and tell me it is.

OH HELL - lastly - I started jogging every morning, trying ANYTHING to get my voice back in shape, cuz lately it's been horrid. Well, tonight I had a serious breakthrough and I'm starting to hit them belting notes again. Dunno how long it'll last. I'm trying to find that post that listed some book/DVD about building your voice. Does anybody remember that post from maybe last November or December?

Hook a cracker up with the knowledge!

Okay. I need my sleep - gotta get up and herd babies in the morning.

I don't know. I'm going to try to be realistic and say September, just in time to pack it in the kids' lunchboxes. Tastes great with milk.

Given that I'm half-way through just tracking the stuff, once it's tracked, then we start the mixdown process which (they tell me) will take even longer, if I want it to sound great.

And yeah, i do.

Now I know why there are so many people jogging these days. They want to get their voice in shape... wink

I have a question: what was the deal with the drummer like? Did he get paid once?

BTW: You don't need to post your tracks, I'll buy the CD anyway. biggrin

Vina you so rock from head to toe and all points in between. Found it and ordered it. Hopefully it's not too late!

I don't want to post anything yet - the mixes I have are seriously just for reference; for me to hear what the drummer's doing so I (maybe) get an idea of where to put the bass, (not going so solid on that plan, oh well).

And it's a trade - I'm designing his web site for his time on the CD - plus, we go way back, good friends, he's hoping I'll become a billionaire with these songs and bring him along.

I might become a hundredaire...
