no sequencer I never understood the concept of sequencing, unless you're pressed for time.

 Then how on earth did you wind up on a Prince fan community? Most of hgis classic 80's stuff features sequenced (linn)drums!

You're right, Hectim. I was wasted when I wrote that thread and I promise to never do that again (drink and start a thread of hypocritical fishtail, that is  )
I love drum machines, since an actual drumset is out of the question (too much noise, not enough space) But, programming a drum machine and sequencing a whole song with recording "tools" are two entirely different deals. Unless, of course, I really don't know what sequencing is and I've just made a total ass of myself. Typical me. Schöne Gruß! "Whatever skin we're in

Sequencing is how I learned to record, but I think that makes me the oddball around here. I don't use a sequencer on a synth... I don't get that. I used software on a computer and a synth. So I select a track on the screen, then find what I want to play on my synth (which sound) and click on record on the puter then play the part. Once I got that down, I select another track on the puter and find another sound to play on the synth and layer the tracks that way. It's pretty much the same way in analog recording, right? What I like about this is I can create an 8 bar verse and just copy and paste it til the cows come home, or the song is over... which ever happens first. And it's really easy to insert 8 measures of silence between the verses so you can create a bridge or chorus and then re-arrange other parts... create an intro and outro later on... Instead of having to recording everything straight through you can piece it together. 
Then once you're done composing and arranging you have to record each midi track as an audio track seperately and begin the mixing, adding eq and effects, panning, etc... So yeah, in a way there isn't much human element going on... if I had to perform my music I'd have to learn it first. But as Bjork once said, you can't blame the computer because it doesn't have a soul; if there is no soul in your music, it's because someone didn't put it there. So even though I'm only playing my stuff when I record it, I'm still putting emotion and feeling into everything I do. At least that's how I look at it. | |

I'm a guy who likes older cars, I guess. I've had this Roland Vs880 since it was still a new device ('round 97?), and before that, one of those good ol' 4-tracks from Tascom(?) and the only difference I truly embrace is that the roland has 4 MORE TRACKS TO USE!!! I still, to this day, probably don't understand it's full potential. Those songs that I have up on Soundclick were all made on that vs880 with help from the cool onboard sound processor and one boss heavy metal pedal. If I had to sequence two drum patterns together, I did it with absolute concentration and the tempo wheel. I guess I have to do things the hard way so I can understand better. I wasn't knocking sequencing (as I understood it), I just think I would get bored of recording if I took that approach. "But, that's just me. I see your point!
At the moment my priorities for example are different. I couldn't afford that much time to do what you think is right. So for me it's more important to get my ideas recorded as fast as possible. Viele Grüße | |

BUT (it's a big one) I can still handwrite faster than I can type Let me put it this way: If the initial idea were for you to use some sort of pro tool to compose your song, then that's a match! If your song or idea was more organic, then why make it sound over-perfect? I just like to shoot for the initial, spontaneous idea right away. after that, it's all procrastination from there.
