Controversy lead synth sound Hi all,
I'm trying to create the Controversy lead synth sound. Anybody got any tips (voices, effects, filters, plugins)? I know it was created on a Oberheim using 4 voices. Our keyboard player has a similar synth plugin, but I'm trying to create it on my Roland XP30. Thanks for your help! David

That synth is cool. I have a sound very similar on my Korg. I don't know what it is, but I use the heck out of it!

It sounds to me that it would be some kind of saw tooth wave but I've not heard the longer album version for ages, it's on vinyl! I don't recall a lead synth part on that song apart from the bass stabs and the melody in the intro. This is one of my fave songs by him ever.
I've got a Yamaha An1x and Ex7 but I've never tried to copy any Prince stuff so I don't really know what I'm talking about!

Well, I'm talking about that sound in the intro. I have wondered if it was the bass. Would it be? I always thought it was a synth, but I'm programming for days now and can't seem to find it. Maybe I need to hook up my bass and try it with that one.
Thanks. David | |

I reckon you keep to using the synth sound for it. I don't think you'd get that sound from a bass unless you had synth FXs for it.
It sounds like a very thick saw tooth wave. If I was trying to recreate that sound I'd use two saw tooth waves with one slightly detuned to thicken the sound up a bit. Also it's got to be an analogue sound so if you've got a virtual analogue synth like a JP8000, Supernova or an AN1x then you should be able to do it.
