KELLY'S CHRONICLES: 2005 Street Painting Festival

8:30 AM Saturday Morning

I got the base coat down. It's called Tempra paint. Kinda like liquid chalk. The downtown area streets are made of shell rock and a very poor canvas. This helps make the colors "pop" out atcha as well as help fill in the grooves a little to make for a smoother surface.

9:00 AM Saturday Morning

Have my basic drawing layed out. Now I'm about ready to work. After some coffee though.

11:00 AM Saturday Morning

After a eight years participating in the festival, I've learned to take it as a "performing art". Meaning not to focus on the final product, rather people come to watch you make something out of nothing. So ... I work on the face first so people can at least see that something is coming of this. So it's like: "That dude's got a serious look on his face, so I'll come back around later to see where this is going."

12:00 PM Saturday

All right, I'm hungry now. I'll try to point out that it's a guitar player. Just then, people walk by ... "Oh, it's a guitar player!" Duh...

1:00 PM Saturday

Got something in the stomach and farted around for a little while. Back to work.

2:00 PM Saturday

Here's where the pace slows down as there are about 70,000 people swarming the streets taking pictures and asking you a gazillion questions.

3:00 PM Saturday

Here's where you start to tune people out and pretend you are deaf or do not understand english so that you can get some work done. Just don't pretend you speak spanish because most people in south florida are bi-lingual.

5:00 PM Saturday

All right then. Here's a good stopping point for the day. The plan is to come and finish and touch up tomorrow morning and enjoy the rest of the festival as a spectator. Oh yeah, I planned to film it this year and take hecka more photos.

Sometime Sunday Night

7:30 AM Sunday Morning

Whatcha gonna do? It's always been a chance that it would rain hard over the weekend. But in the 11 years of the festival, it's never been more than a slight drizzle that actually kinda helps your painting by adding a little moisture.

10:30 AM Sunday Morning

The rain has not stopped and doesn't look like it's going too. So I went to Wal-Mart and got a poarch tent thingy and a sheet of plywood. Got it all up in the rain and soaking wet. The weather man called for thundershowers for the entire day. Did that stop me? Heck NO! I'm doing this! I've been working this thing since October damnit! 10 bucks for some plywood. 99 bucks for this tent thingy. Hey I'm smart!

Just as I got the tent thingy up, the rain stopped and the sun came out and did not return. Man, I'm stupid.

12:00 - 3:00 PM Sunday

Scaled down what I planned to do to about 1/4 the size. Sure I could have done a lot more, (and better. It's hiddious, I know) but time was running out. I wanted to knock something out in aobut 3 hours and I did. Here's my contribution, now I have to go film and photograph the event. I'm the webmaster too. I'm working this thing remember? I'll have the other photos online soon here: http://streetpaintingfest...ntings.htm

Monday Night

With a little help from photoshop, this is closer to what I intended for the final output for Sunday. I'll be keeping that tent thingy in the garrage for next year!

The T-shirts sold this year were of my painting from last year. They almost sold out! People dug 'em.

Here's the close up.

Frank's Live set was AWESOME.
We'll have those mp3's up soon.

The video/DVD will be in production for a few weeks. It's going to rock!

More to come!

Ahhhh was waiting for this post. Fantastic YaYa...brilliant use of color and space. The tent had me laughing (wouldn't a piece of plastic and some rocks covered it).

That's what messed it up. When you cover your stuff in a bad rain, the plastic only keeps the water underneath it and forms a puddle under the plastic. You can't really seal it. Even though we put a ton of duct tape all around it, the surface is not flat so the current of a heavy rain goes right underneath it.

Lesson learned here is NOT to cover it. Those who did not cover their paintings survived the rain! They were faded, but they didn't have to start from scratch.

Stupid me found this out two years ago, so I don't really know why I thought covering it this year would make a difference. The plastic really only works in a light "drizzle" situation.

Big Time!
We may fly him in next year. I spoke with his wife a few weeks ago and they love the pictures I send them and would be very interested in taking a three day weekend, mini vacation out of St. Louis in February!

In this one, the knuckles on the right hand were really bothering me. lol They look like they are bending forward under the knuckles... but maybe it just wasnt done yet. boxed

This one just seems more proportionate. I guess maybe the original artwork is supposed to be that way... but I kinda liked the dimensions of this better. Looking at them together now though, I can see how the second one was rushed.

His right... the shading just looks awkward to me. The strumming hand.

Under the white lines.

Funking Hell! Nothing happens easily does it. Once again Perserverance Furthered. Brilliant how you got the 3D perspective . It's a flat surface ? Not lifted somehow ? this pic. looks like it's on a curved panel. Photoshop s'pose. I like the blue bit at the top. Nice work!
Who's the dude ? Anyone we know ? Your a bit of a genius I gotta say. thumbs up!

Onya Mate for being the MAN. Wonderful story, looking forward to seeing the coverage on the site: http://streetpaintingfest...ntings.htm
Plus hear Frank's music. lol
~PClinuxOS~ yes I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... I drop in from time to time, ... thumbs up!

The only file that was photoshoped was this one: http://kellymcclain.net/SPF2/Final.jpg

The first day I painted on the road. Flat surface. The second day, I did a rush job on three panels of plywood. I had to buy three panels because one 4X8 wouldn't fit in the car. If you look close, you can see the breaks in the wood.

THANKS!

Here's my news spot that they clipped down to about 5 or 10 seconds, Oh well.

BUT HEY! I WAS ON TV!!!

Man, I look fat! I guess the camera really does add 20 lbs. This footage was shot the day before the festival when we were setting up the tents for the vendors, hanging signs and putting up baracades. In the rain, I might add.

Deffinately not my purtiest moment.

Kelly, you are truly the Org Artist. This work is fantastic - especially under the pressure of mounting lightning and rain. You should have called me, you know I can pull strings at weather.com!

Fantastic work. When are you going to have a showing at a local gallery? Seriously, I'm not blowing smoke, I'm seriously asking. Daddy wants a painting. Hook a cracker up!!
