How to prolong the life of my guitar

I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio, which I use for evey gig I do, on average three per month.

We play for a long time and get very hot and sweaty. The top edge of the guitar, where my strumming arm rubs and rests on the woodwork, is getting worn and losing its finish.

How can I prevent this from happening, and generally protect my babe from the effects of sweating and all that yeuchy stuff?

a. Buy another one and keep it in a glass case.
b. Not sweat.
c. Revel that you're "breaking her in" and giving your guitar that "LOVED" look.

Okay, seriously, I know people who coddle their guitars. Wipe it down after you play it. Get some polish. Protect the finish and dont wear things that'll wear the finish down.

Or, wear that thing in like a pair of shoes you plan to keep forever.

It's normal for a guitar's finish to wear at the back of the guitar (because of belts and studs on jeans) and near where you pick (pick hits wood). I don't think what you just described is normal (even though it CAN look way cool). I have a 15 year old LP standard and no finish troubles save for the back. Maybe the finish on the studio model is different? Anyhow, if I were you I'd see a luthier about maybe adding a layer of finish to protect your instrument.
Short version: see a good luthier.

Afterthought edit: the .org's own Scotty2Funky is a damn good luthier if I'm not mistaken. Maybe you could orgnote him about this.
