Damn. When I went to see The Time a while back, it was in a small club and the music was so freaking loud I was nauseous. I swear, my nostrils were vibrating with the bass. That kinda sounds funny now, but it was really uncomfortable and I'm not exagerating. I could feel my notrils buzzing with the bass. I think most people we too drunk to notice. I didn't have anything to drink that night.

Yeah, I have read that too. I have been to countless techno, house and drum&bass nights, and I have experienced very (too) loud levels. Worst was at a DJ gig by Derrick May, the bass made my entire body shake and made me feel very unpleasant, I had to get away from there. Too bad, because May's set was awesome, but the bass was just too much for me. I am not surprised reading that lungs can collapse after that particular experience.

I have never understood some people's obsession with an over-loud, booming bass sound When did a nice, balanced clear sound give way to bass-heavy, punch-in-the-stomach-but-you-can't-actually-hear-all-the-instruments mentality?

And yes, I AM a heavy metal/ rock fan. I saw Motorhead last year, and all I could hear were the bass drums and toms. Rubbish, absolute rubbish. Music can be powerful without being a big mushy BOOM .

While I treasure my health as much as the next guy, I must admit that there's nothing like the rush of excitement when the bass drops into a drum 'n' bass record and you're on the dancefloor and it really physically hits you. Then again: I haven't been to a d'n'b party for three years and there's a good reason for that too: I got sick of the extreme loudness only getting worse and worse. I myself have DJ-ed and produced d'n'b music and I've often been astounded at the incredible, eaar shattering volumes at which pro d'n'b DJs and producers mix in the booth and in the studio. I'm talking about the kind of volumes Sonic Youth used to perform at in the 80s. To put it simply: many of these guys are at least halfway deaf already and just keep turning it up.

I've had a couple Pneunothoraxes and they're NOT pleasant! Though they weren't from bass exposure. Man, bass is a really crazy frequency! Anyone remember taht episode of South Park with the "Brown SOund?"
