I dig this a lot. Very sexy. The bassline makes it Doorsy as well, even though they didn't have a bass player... I'd like to hear your voice with less effects. (reverb) The backwards shit really freaked me out! I'm listening in headphones and I didn't expect that. The strings are nice. That kinda makes it Doorsy as well... have you ever heard American Prayer?

Good stuff.

I just thought that the reverb added to the ambiance of the song. I actually had more on there and backed some of it off. And the backwards shit - just learning to use this new toy! wink And, gee, I haven't listened to the Doors forever. I had more of a Chris Isaak vibe in mind...

Yeah, I'd just like to hear a little variation in your voice. Effects are cool, but it sounds like you use the same settings for each song. I just kept thinking, I know his natural speaking voice doesn't sound like this... Try a little less, just my opinion.

peace

Ok...I'd really been laying off the reverb, too. The mastering settings on the new Zoom are different than the ones that I'd used before - the last few songs had a lot of spoken parts in them. Did the backwards voice freak you out or the backwards guitar, Vina?

Great vibe, great feel. Pull the bass's chorus WAAAY back. It's too distracting. If you're going for a tex-mex song, you want the bass to be there, but not THERE. The guitars are kickass. The vocals are too bright, but your singing is great.

Unfortunately, the drums are horrible. The drum kit is some sort of a "Mexican Radio" thing, but because there's no real dynamics in there, it makes the whole song feel like a cheap karaoke backing track. So either change that snare, pull out the stereo chorus and roll back the high eq, and put it deep in some verb, or - try the brush drum kit. I dunno.

I like this tune. It's very good - save for the drums man.

ALSO - just me - I'd like a mufrukkin WHUMP bass drum on the one. WHUMP! chorus... give it more of a Mardi-Gras funeral march procession feel.

Thanks for the feedback. I put nothing on the bass - it's just that compression setting. Is it too loud? I think I used one of the clarifying mastering settings on this. The drums I programmed myself - is there a 3/4 pre-programmed beat on the machine at all? I originally had them reverb drenched, but brought most of it off. And this is the brushes. I was going brushes all the way on this one, homie. I'm not a very good mixer-downer or EQ-er. I know if I took this over to the keyboard player's place and mixed it down into Sonar he'd make it sound kick-ass (hmmm...I think I will!). BTW, I think that you need to post a few pictures of your studio setup. I mean the fallen tree and renovation pics were nice, but...

Thanks, Tal. I was just messing with the drums a second ago and I gave up very quickly. Somebody do a remix! Haha...

I'm gonna go over to my bandmate's house this evening and I'll see if he will remix this for me and if that improves everything. I'll check in later with results....hopefully!

We dumped all of the tracks into Sonar at his studio tonight. We didn't get to finish the whole thing, but I'll have him mixdown something this weekend until we record the live drum part.

Come closer...let me whisper it in your ear.

I'll give you a hint - Prince says this at the end of a song that's on the 1999 album.

A review from Soundclick:

Artist 08 "Hedonist Confidential" Review
« Thread started on: Jan 26th, 2005, 11:17am »

Hey Artist 08, thanks for submitting your music to us again. Looks like we've got a returning happy customer!!

First of all let me get the bad news out of the way. I know, I'm going to start you out with bad news. sorry.

The vocals, the way they were recorded, it sounds like there is too much reverb... the vocals almost sound like you are in a concert hall. Now, if this is a live recording, thats fine, but , I don't think it's a live recording, but yet, the vocals sound live, like they are bouncing off the stadium walls. Kinda cool, but not for a studio recording.

There, that wasn't so bad now was it? Thats all the bad news I have! Once you listen to this song a couple times you get used to the reverb in the vocals, so it sounds normal, but at first glance, I'd recommend, next, time, not using as much effects on the vocals. A little is fine.

This is a great song, in fact I was shocked. Its so good that I was shocked! The overall recording quality is amazing, the lyrics are sweet and cool, the over all structure is great! I mean, what more can I say? The part where you are talking... is that another language? I'm thinking it is. That part sounds cool as well.

The lead guitar riffs are smooth and "groovy" as they would say in the 60s. The slow tremlo strumming of the electric guitar, is relaxing and fits perfectly with the theme and overall appearance of this song. The back-up "shooby doos" add even more to this already light, groovy, retro pop rock masterpiece!

Have a nice day!
Billy
