Does anyone know how to get that strumming sound? Do the strings on the acoustic have to be string or nylon? I'd really love to know the recording technique for this as it'd fit nice n' snuggly into few of my songs.

I'm pretty sure those aren't nylon strings. I have a 12-string Ovation and when I give it lots of treble, I get a sound similar to what you're looking for.

add lot's of compression and limiting.
pan guitar track to one side of stereo-field.
