after parting with my band, i've started building a studio of my own
When i was with my group we used protools LE on windows, with reason, cakewalk fruityloops etc.. you name it
from what i remember, we use to lose massive amount of material cause of the periodic freezings, and because we had to use so many programs
now that im on my own, i've converted to mac
and am in a euphoric place
IMO mac is the perfect enviorment for music production
its extremely simple to sync with any midi , just by usb hubs

im in the process of recording songs now and i can see its a world of a difference from i use to do on pc's

Panther is an AWESOME OS and I can't think of anything that they would have wanted to "improve" on. But they sent out this auto update for it and a whole lot of users can't even boot up. It totally fried my laptop. In the history of apple updates, this has got to be a record for screwing up their users. Please wait until they figure out what went wrong. I've never had a problem with my apple until now. When I visited the apple user group boards, I saw way too many people having the same problem, and most of them said that it was a first for them as well. I guess they can't be perfect all the time, oh well. So far they've narrowed it down a little to USB devices being plugged in during the installation as well as 3rd party utilities that may have been running in the background. I had both going on during my crack at it. Just wait a little bit before this one.

Thank goodness it was just the laptop, although it will still take hours of restoring it and loading all the apps.

In any event, PC or MAC, I've learned to store all my work on external drives. It would be a real sad day if I had stored all that data on a local drive. I have three 120 GB and a 500 GB (I do a lot of video) and when I need to travel, it's so much easier to carry the laptop with one of the external drives than to lug the tower and the cinema display.

Anyway, apple has always created for the creative, it seems. All their ads seem to deal with artists and music. You sure pay for the quality, but it'so worth it down the road. When I compare all the problems I've had using both, apple has really out-shined the PC.

BTW, someone told me that the dual G4 and G5 processing units have been banned by the US military for export to many areas of the world. They said that they were just too powerful and could be too dangerous in the wrong hands.

Seems pretty crazy. Has anyone heard this as well?

Part of me thinks it's true, or at least perhaps the ban was considered because all the military buddies I have say that their technology is about 10-20 years behind everyone else! (lol)

Like I said, sounds pretty crazy, but still a good story.

I know when I do work for a certain corporation, their security team is always shutting down my ports because they say that the apple automatically connects to too many secure areas of their network. They don't seem to think that's as neat-o as I find it to be. They also don't like that they can't tap into my MAC and monitor what I do.

In my experience, Mac is the way to go. I've used the same iMac for 2 1/2 years and has never frozen/crashed on me when working on any of my music apps. Just installed Reason to my iBook and have been using it for my live keyboard rig as of late. Very stable and easy to configure.
A friend of mine has similar apps running on a newer Dell that constantly crashes!!! Just an observation.

Yes, Mac is more aimed at the creative and the OS has always been more stable than windows. However, things have improved with PC's and Mac is not the holy grail.
For example, a few years ago I had an artist in my studio who brought his own mac with MIDI tracks. So I hooked it up to have it sync'ed with the recorder and as soon as I hit 'Play' on the recorder, the Mac froze. After a few hours of rebooting and trying to solve the problem, we ended up transferring the midi stuff to the old Atari and everything went well from then on.
I use a PC myself with WinXP, Cubase SX and Reason and I have no real complaints. I have no lock-ups or anything (although this was very different before I used WinXP and CubaseSX) but maybe I'm just lucky... I have used Macs for years and I really love them. Maybe I'll go back to Mac sometime, but these days my PC serves me well.

altho i will admit that Apple will put me in the poor house one day. their gear is real good gear.

Why aren't you using the Protools LE you had on the new Mac?
I'm also thinking that after the move to NY, I'm going to sell my IBM laptop, my FIREWIRE 410 soundcard and get an iMac with M-Box.
