Why not buy Digi 002? It's Protools, and costs about $2k.
Or, you could go for Steinberg Cubase SX3, or Nuendo 2. I think they cost around $600.
There's also Digi 001, for $1,000.
Those smaller systems of Protools do require a very powerful computer to work well, but it lets you work with Protools.

If you work on Mac, there's also Logic 7 from Emagic.

I use Digital Performer. It cost under $500 and is on par with Pro Tools. Mark Brown uses it in hios studio ans so does Shania Twain.

If you have win98, you can download ProToolsFree. it's a version with 8 audio channels that doesn't require any Digidesign hardware. meaning it works with any sound card. But only on Win98.

The M Box by Digidesign is great and affordable, too - I paid about $500 and some change at a Guitar Center. There are 32 tracks available for recording; however, there are only two inputs. If you're not going to be recording a whole band at once, though, it's the perfect tool.

O.K.;so yeh i downloaded Pro Tools® FREE 5.0.1.471 R2. shocked omfg omg nuts boxed& as you may guess i'm a little confused.I've got Win98 s.e.and a 350 Mhz Pentium 2, which is about the lowest system requirments for running"IT".I dunno whether to put in the hours and see if i can get it happening; being a glutton for punishment and desperate to have a recording program i'll probably give it a go.My initial response is probably an over reaction at the crappy looking interface, i just hope i don't drive myself crazy. eek
~PClinuxOS~ yes I've been here longer than I care to remember, ... I drop in from time to time, ... thumbs up!

Well, it's the old interface of Protools, and it's also the Windows version.
So yes, the interface looks crappy, a little. but actually the interface in any program might look weird at first.
The free version is some sort of a teaser - "If you liked it, buy the real system" But it's a good start to get you to know what Protools is about.

Yeh , look thanks man 4 steering me to this "freeby"! I think it may just do the job wink The worst scenario is that i may learn something. I'm having fun playing with it, my objective is to get some sound down, all good things take time.(too much it seems !) peace
