What microphone do you use live? What vocal microphone do you or a singer in your band use while playing live? I can't use my AKG C-1000 because it would just feed back (it's hot) so I use the Sure 58-beta that my guitar/keyboard player has. Everyone else uses a regular 58. I'm thinking about buying my own mic so that he can use his beta again. Any suggestions? (I like the beta more than the regular 58)

I usually just use what the club has, which alot of times is a Sure SM-58. Why do you like the beta better?

It's a bit hotter and livelier. This is true of the beta series and lesser known! That'd be my ideal live vocal mike for sure too. 'dre Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

The SM57 I have has been through hell and back with zero performance issues.
Hitting it with drum sticks, putting in front of a Marshall stack on 10 and screaming into it like I was committing a crime, it's meant for abuse and great sound but you have to sing right into it.

SM-58.
I haven't tested the Beta yet, but yes, it's supposed to sound better. The 57 is not meant for vocals though. It's the same as the 58 but without the 'popper'.

I'd like to go check out that there 58-beta. I have two 57s and a 58. As long as you learn to keep your mouth 4 inches AWAY from the mic, and not eat the mic, the results will be a WHOLE lot better I think. I'm still eating the mic when things get frisky... it's just a bad ol' habit I picked up as a whipper snapper. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

I found that on older PA systems, the 58 sounds better somehow but on better PA systems the beta 58 sounds clearer. Also, the beta 58 is less sensitive to feedback problems.
But somehow, I still like the regular 58 better in general. It's just a bit warmer. Ah well, it's just a matter of personal taste I suppose... "Give a monkey a brain and he'll swear he's the center of the universe" (Fishbone)
