Heavenly

I'm using cubase in my studio. know every little bit of it. but teaching someone over the net, is almost impossible, because there are so many options and ways to work with it.

any specific question you may have, I'd be happy to answer.
but before you ask, make sure you give some tech info:
- what processor
- what OS (Win XP, Win98 etc..)
- how much RAM
- which sound card
- Working with MIDI keyboard?
- using VST Instruments or just sounds from your synth/module?
- Recording vocal or other 'live' instruments?
- if so, what mic are you using?

all this little question will help me a lot to help you.

OK, to get you started we need to setup your sound card right.
I'm not sure if your sound card has an ASIO Driver, but try this:
In Cubase, go to Devices menu, then Device Setup.
On your left you'll see a list, choose VST Multitrack.
On your top right, you'll see a drop list, when you should choose your sound card's Asio Driver. if you don't have one, choose ASIO Multimedia driver. but if your sound card has an ASIO Driver on that list, it's much much better.
on the main window, you probably have a blank grey column to the left. if you right click it, you can then choose to create a new track. that could be an Audio track, a Midi track and all other kinds of tracks that we won't care about for now smile
Now that you've created a new Audio track, choose it by clicking it (somewhere on it where there are no buttons).
Now to the left of it, there's a column with all it's properties. where you can choose the input and output of your audio track.
I'm guessing your sound card has one stereo output, which means it'll probably show you on the output - Bus 1 and the input will probably show something like "Left-stereo in)"
there are a few menus on that column, like: Inserts for that channel, or sends for sending it to all kinds of effects, volume and panning, and EQ.
if you have any microphone connected to your computer, try and record with it.
You might need to set up adittional inputs, like Mic input. that can be done in the Devices menu, in the VST Inputs. Just add a new bus, and to the right of that new bus, you can choose which input it will use.

I know it sounds confusing. it's easier to understand if I could show you, but I have no website to post screen shots.

hmmm

What version of Cubase is it?
When you run Cubase, there should be a menu by the name of Devices (as far as I remember, I don't have Cubase around me at the moment).
In that list, the very last choice is Device setup.

Did you get the manual with it? I thought it was quite good.

Anyway, start a new project in the 'File' menu and choose 'empty project'. You are prompted to choose a folder which you want to use for the project.
If you're using Cubase VST, use the left and right mouse button on the ruler just above the 'main' editor screen (the arrange window, it's the 1st screen that will pop up if you start a new project) to set the left resp. right locators. All your recordings and looping etc. will generally start at left- and until the right locator. They are the black vertical lines across the arrange window.
On Cubase SX, you set the locators by dragging them with your left mouse button.
Double click on the left side of the arrange window to add a channel. You might have to change the channel type to either 'Audio' or 'MIDI' (depending on what you want, the little wave is audio, the MIDI plug icon is MIDI).
Use the right mouse button anywhere in an editor to get a menu for deleting, moving, editing etc.
When you have recorded anything, a 'part' will appear (a block of audio or midi), or you can create an empty part by double clicking between the left and right locator.
Double-click on the part to go to the appropriate editor.
Some handy shortcuts on the number key pad:
0: Stop (when stopped, go to left locator. When on left locator, go to beginning)
1: Go to left locator
2: Go to right locator
Enter: Play
*: Record
/: Loop

I hope this will get you started a bit, but I suggest to get a hold of the manual and read it thoroughly. There's too much to it to explain using just a forum.
