Hi folks,

I have recently ordered a new soundcard, it's the M-Audio Omni Studio ($250, very special price):

I am very happy with it because it offers 24 bit recording as well as balanced mic/line inputs with pre-amps and phantom power. I will be able to plug in guitar and bass, and I will finally be able to record my voice at home. You better watch out for that, LOL!
Now I have to wait a few weeks before it arrives, I know it's gonna be a long long wait!

I am also looking for good studio monitors (up to $500 a pair). Does anyone have some tips? I have roamed about every musicians site but opinions vary completely. I'm a bit lost, so please help me if you can give me some "sound" advice.

I too am about to get some computer equipment! I will finally be able to use my MTV Music Generator, Soundforge, and CakeWalk audio software, because I am getting a new soundcard from my mom and dad for my birthday! Congrats, Funkaholic!

That's cool man, congratulations!

I have already bought a badass PC in december last year, but didn't have the money left to buy a good soundcard immediately. So I was actually recording at home with the very sloppy built-in soundcard using a cheap 5.1 speakerset. Needless to say that the results (when played on a normal stereo) sound desastreus.

So when I have the new soundcard and the monitors I will finally have the setup that I have dreamt of for so long. And then I will start using Cubase and a dozen of cool synths and editing/mastering/sample programs that I've downloaded from Kazaa, instead of just Reason. If at that stage I still won't be able to make some kickass sounding tracks (on my own), I will never succeed!

I'm seriously gonna have to upgrade to that kind of system by the end of this year.
I only got 600 mhz right now.

Yeah, it's a pretty bad soundcard, isn't it? I have been searching and searching for the right card but couldn't find it within my budget. Then I saw this one on special sales, and I was sold immediately!

I'm quite fond of Spirit Absolute 2 monitors and they fit into your budget quite nicely.
They sound very crisp and clear. For mixing the bottom end, I've found that it helps to turn up the volume and check if the bottom end stays strong and tight, or else you might be tempted to make your mix too 'bass-ey'. All in all they have an incredible range and for the budget they're hard to beat. Compared to Yamaha NS-10, they also sound quite pleasing which makes them a bit more pleasing to work with (NS-10 are also very good for mixing, but lack bottom end and actually sound quite horrible overall).
