"Stand Still (demo)" - Raf & The DreZone

Tonight, my best friend Raf came over to my studio for the 1st time since the renovations and I'm glad he did. He reminded me of how fun and spontaneous Music creation can be when U act solely on the vibe! nod

We did a killer jam where he's on Guitar and vocals and I'm playing everything else (plus additional vocals too). A more edited and structured version has been contemplated for NFO3.

Until then enjoy what we pulled off tonight, showing off my new Fender Rhodes sound on my Roland XP-60 (thru the SRJV expansion card I just bought!) and Live Drums which were (and are) intended for the new album.

For this track though, think an amalgamation of Slave, Zapp, Parliament and Prince!

http://www.drezone.ukf.ne...ew_raf.htm

There are both RealPlayer and MP3 versions of the demo. Hope all is well with y'all!

When I hear this kind of jams I just wished I had a little more patience in learning to play instruments. Very cool stuff, Dre! I just fake the funk, using samplers and stuff. Prince would hate me and my sequencing ass, LOL! lol
RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

First and most importantly, THANK YOU FOR POSTING AN MP3!!!!

Second, this is awesome and if this is what spontaneous jams are around the studio, when can I fly over?!? Love the Rhoads, love the vocals with the falsetto in combo with the lower part, I mean what don't I love about this? Funk and Soul all day long, what an inspiration.

Are you playing the drums or is that a drum machine? I honestly can't tell.

I've realised that some ppl can't play the Real files because they are on AOL (booooo!!!!!) but nevermind, I thought an MP3 would accomodate y'all as a lot seems 2 traverse thru (even if I am probably the only one on this planet STILL using dial-up!)

Fly over when ya ready, I'll be right here 4ever recording (I hope!). I love the Rhodes too, bought it on Ebay and got really excited, I got the EVP88 for Logic but U can't exactly take it out on a gig really!

The Falsetto is my main man Raf having a load of fun and gettin' in2 it, he's such a talented guitarist but he doesn't do much recording which is such a shame so I've been trying 2 wein him in2 my flock.

There is now a 10-minute version of this track which includes a take which was left off this version! but will only make it available on demand!!!!

The Drums are live, they were recorded last Monday in a session that I did for my album where I have live Drums on a few tracks and a horn section on 3 tracks.

Kind of a "Cloreen Baconskin" thing goin' on as the same break in it's ENTIRETY will be used for a track on the album but that'll come.... September 25th.

Raf and I have a CD called "The Collaborative Collection" which just categorizes the tracks we've done 2gether over the years... however this is probably the best by far! nod

Not quite sure really, we just picked a key and jammed blindly! Totally abstract!

I don't own a talkbox yet. I use my trusty CZ-101 as a carrier with a custom-programmed sound and the very same headset U see in my avatar (by Gamma Electronics)! It's actually used for when I'm DJ-ing, but I run it through a BOSS CL-50 single-channel Compressor for compensation of volume fluctuation.

I gotta ditto what Chris said above- thanks for posting an mp3 link! "Stand still while U listen 2 this - I dare ya!" This is a great funk jam: the funk scratch guitar and the slap bass are slammin, the c-o-o-l funk anthem chants are there, very good work Dre and Raf

Its in c#min because that chord was originally going to be E maj 7, but because i wanted to have something where i could do funkier things with it (which is usually more suitable in min, min7, min6, min 9 etc), i changed it to its relative minor (c#min), and then any notes played or sung over it wouldnt have to change, while keeping the other two chords the same. And i was going to change the bassline slightly after deciding on c#min, but it ended up sounding pretty good as it was already.
Anyway the only thing that im really interested in is that it can be sung over comfortably, and it isnt ridiculously high or low. Other than that, it could be in H minor and id still be happy with it.

that explains it...I find it kinda rare for a bass player 2 jam in that key. they tend 2 lean towards the keys of E,A, and B minor if they wanna lay down some monster bass lines.

I guess so, but unless there are any particular degrees of the scale that youre playing in that sound better on open strings for whatever reason, or unless you want to do certain things, like hammer on from an open string note to a fretted note, id rather just pick any key, making sure it aint too high/low for whatever else youre doing in the song (and that not all your songs are in the same 2 or 3 keys) and just get on with the whole thing quickly while the feelings there, rather than worry about these technicalities, which hardly make any difference.

The whole idea of what key something is in i just find so boring (as well as talk of equiptment & instruments used, unless one is an engineer/technician. When people ask me what guitar i play, i tell them its a brown one), Thats why i never understand why in classical music they say that something is in Cminor, or A major. who cares? ones ears and sense of taste dont favour something any more or less because of its key. I really dont get why so many musicians, of all people, can sometimes be so interested in the silly things, at the expense of the important things, like how it feels.

Having said all that, i must say that i do end up gravitating towards E, A or B (minor or major) quite often. I guess its just a habit, or probably because those notes are easy to spot on the fretboard because of the dots. Yeah it must be that.

Do you live in this website?
By the way thanks for the 20% cut on sales of your album at the prince thing. You were in that hypnotic trance, remember? Oh no i guess not. Anyway well talk about it again soon, but just remember to look into my eyes while we do so. And dont forget to get the dj to play that really rare prince song called "stand up" or "stand erect" or some shit like that. You know the one, the one that makes you feel like everythings gonna be alright, instead of asking the man at the wrecka stow how many britney spears albums hes got left, ask him how much funk, baby, cos in this life, things are much better than in the charts, in this life, were bad to the bone...and if shitney tries to break us down, tell her to "Stand Still". And if she dont, well take turns in whooping her ass. Hmmm, thats a thought, now.
