Getting my boy playing and recording.

SO last night, I watched my son play with his new band, "No Cable". It's amazing to watch your own child making up his own stuff with a band.

Let me back up.

When I was 17 or 18, I went to see a friend's punk rock/new wave band. (The Cocktail Girlz). The thing that blew my mind was knowing that the guitar player wrote all the songs, and the rest of the band was following his ideas... that you could just THINK up something as odd as a song like "Bearded Clam" or "Omula Oklahoma", and these other three guys would go along, and then LO! chicks in the crowd, (20 people maybe) KNEW the words!

It was power.

And that was when I knew I wanted to write songs and lead a band... just the idea of putting together a song and seeing other people "get" your idea and then a crowd actually bothering to learn the words... it STILL blows my mind.

Last night, at my son's house (divorced, he lives with his mom, but I see him all the time - get together once a week to shoot the bull) I was down watching him work with his band, and then I helped him set up a beat up old 4-track and record them playing. The look on his face when he played back the 45 seconds of them playing - it reminded me how much I love playing music.

Now, before you look for posts of his fantastic music, I will tell you, it is as bad and primitive and "garage" as the first thing I ever recorded, if not even worse. But nonetheless, HE was digging it, the drummer was digging it, the bass player was digging it and I was digging it.

THAT is just fucking awesome. Just wanted to share something for you musician parents to look forward to!!

touched That is SO cool, Beau! Once again I applaud your fatherhood. You just don't know what I'm going through right now with my father... it really sucks. Anyway, great story and thanks for sharing. I think it's really cool that you're being reminded of what got you into music in the first place. You rock.

Very Cool!

I look forward to these times with my son. (he's not quite 2 yet)
Last night, I showed him FIRE! Whoo Hoo!

Some sparkelers, I had since the 4th that when it came time, he was already asleep. I finally broke them out last night and man, did his eyes light up!

Thanks for sharing this. Keeps me looking forward to the future.

Great story, Otan. Reminds me of how my dad helped me with my first bands!

HOWEVER...

This coming hot on the heels of your "I'm taking a sabattical from recording" post, are you sure you're not secretly transferring your filthy recording habit onto your defenseless offfspring? wink
