Battle of sound when mixing

Hi guys, I am trying to record a solo over a heavy riff, but i can´t seem to know how to mix it, i think that the riff isn´t loud enough, or the guitar solo isn´t loud enough. The bass on the Guitar is in DROP D and the solo is high on the neck. I don´t know how to mix well so the riff is still heavy and the solo loud enough to be heard. Any guitar-heavy freaky here now how mix? i should eq. the solo full of mids and the riff guitar full of bass and high freq.? thanks in advance.

why don't you try panning the riff hard left and the solo hard right? see what happens!
