Young musicians in the new world : you need to realise that receiving personal credit is a trick - that it's not about YOU - that the old world industry is a trap - that global domination is ugly - that you are providing a SERVICE - not a PLATFORM FOR PERSONAL GAIN - that what you create and release EFFECTS SOCIETY.

But it would be nice to pay the mortgage, taxes, light bill and everything else it takes to function in the modern system with music, wouldn't it?

Right now, it's a job that I'm really not into as much as music.

And I thought it AFFECTS society, not EFFECTS. EFFECTS: noun - personal effects, special effects, guitar effects. AFFECTS: verb: shit affects things.

I totally respect and admire PB's passion and dedication to her art and her spirituality. Yes, we all gotta pay the bills, and it would be nice to pay them with money made from our art, however Pilot Beacon is an example of how much your creativity can flourish if you just "let it go." I'm still holding on, mainly because my stuff isn't as polished as I'd like it to be, although some people have already asked if they could buy it. This reminds me of what Prince said on TRL when he was asked about giving songs to other artists. "If you want more love, give it away. If you want more money, give it away. If you want more music, give it away."

Hi Slave,

One of the points I've tried to make in the link is
that you CAN earn money from your craft
if you LOCALISE your product

Local Radio Stations
Community Radio Stations
Local Venues
Internet

Thanks for reading,

I really enjoyed reading this. Thank You!

To me spirituality consists of many paths, one question leads another question and each question is as unique as the one asking it. Nobody can tell anyone else the answers to these questions, others can help lead, but the answers lie within the individual. I look at it like a wheel with many spokes each representing a path (christianity, jehova witness, alah, all that stuff) - all these paths, which people just seem to fall into, lead to a center. This center is The Truth. There is only ONE truth and it doesn't have anything to do with being wrong or right! Don't mean to get too deep it's just another question if will.

Damn, that last sentence would make a great lyric. lol lol

You're exactly right. Success or should I say commercial success means nothing. On the other hand you could say to yourself, I just make music, it's my art I don't care if I'm successful, but that's not true either. This is so old, but so true:

If one person is moved or gets something from any of my songs, then I've accomplished my goal as an artist.

As an artist we need an audience, that's the point, right? Sharing ourselves, which is basically what any artist does. If an artist isn't true with himself, then what are we seeing and hearing? That's what's cool about the internet, because we now not only have choice but an audience. You can almost look at the internet as a next step for us as human beings. The primitive beginnings of networking, sharing, bringing people together. Probably by the time I'm dead people will be pluggin' in to go to their virtual work place. --- alright, you got me... I watch too much science fiction, but think about it. The potential of the internet is in its infancy.

No matter what, we all have to play the game for what's it's worth, especially if we want to pay our rent. With that, I have another old saying, one which the meaning is lost in its frequent use.

Be true to thy self!
