Be Gentle, like it's my first time... O.K. so after a long-ass hiatus, I'm back to making music.
This is the first time I've recorded with this quality level, so there's no hiding behind shitty sound. This is also the first time I've made an attempt at my favorite music style; FUNK. I'm playing all the instruments and singing (if you can call it that). I'm recording in a small room with no air conditioning (the air conditioner and fan makes too much noise) and laying down one track at a time. I've learned just the basics with Sonar and mixing but enough with the excuses. WHATCHA THINK? Let's hear it all, the good, the bad and the ugly. http://www.slave2dagroove.../index.htm it's towards the bottom, DON'T DOUBLE CLICK ON IT, right click and "save as" to your computer to listen. Oh yeah, thanks in advance for posting ANY opinions.

THE J B'S ----- YEAH!
THE J B'S ----- YEAH! THE J B'S ----- YEAH! Man, this is the foundation right here The kind of stuff I try to come up with all the time and can't. I throw one of these your way for playing everything And you've got me cracking up: "Shut Up, Boy!!!!! Shut It!!!!! What the HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!!!" The groove itself? I find absolutely no flaws because I could groove off of this all day long. However, if you play horns, I'd include that too because I keep waiting for Maceo or Fred to blow at any minute. My only real suggestion would be the sound of the drums. I think they make the song sounds like an audience recording of a live J.B. show. I'm definitely no expert on playing or recording but if there was a way to make drums sound more crisp, that'd be the only change I make. Great work, Slave. Keep it coming

I gotta tell you Slave. I just finished listening to this at work and I'm fighting back the temptation to start sliding across the floor! Nice track. The only thing I'd change would be to be to make the drums more snappy. I gotta listen to this again! Way too funky!

Thanks for the kind words.
I want to create music that I can play live so that's what's up with the live sound. I'll try some close-mic stuff this week but just on the drums. [This message was edited Mon Jul 19 7:32:47 2004 by Slave2daGroove]

WOW. This sounds like some James Brown Out-take from WAAAAY back. I love the ending. This is very basement underground FUNK. It sounds like one of them old dustay ass 45's B-Sides of some group called "The BJaks" that has been lying in the same spot for YEARS.
This was a trip and a half, honey girl. Thanks for the funk! Damn...inspitrations..... Straight Jacket Funk Affair

The drums are just kickass on this. Get a stereo condenser, or maybe place some ambient mics around to get a nice stereo feel on the recording. Just my take.
I want more bass up in this! I hear it, but it's scared and hiding in the corner, when it should be out in front carrying the bass drum. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

hey man, you recorded that by yourself!
That shit is aaaawwwwllllright! They don't call him Slave2daGroove for nothin' I'd say just keep trying things. Make as much music as you can. I really liked the raw production sound. i read what you wrote about the non-air conditioning factor after I heard the song and I was nodding because I thought that it sounded something like that when i was listening to it. Like a funky raw basement recording. I like the part near the end too where the groove just makes ya yell!! Thanks Slave2daGroove for sharing with us. Definitely. This is true PUNK FUNK. It's raw and unapologetic and stuff. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

I actually like the Drums on this! The whole thing sounds like one big LIVE one-take recording which I thought was mighty impressive to pull off!
It's actually hard to believe that this is just one person, it's played and mixed real well. Dirty demo with a genius finish - could easily be mistaken for tape recorder being placed in the middle of the room picking up everything placed on to magnetic stripe! "Who the hell is James Brown?" - slammin' dissociation! 'dre Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

Dre, from you that's more than a compliment to me, thank you.
Punk Funk? I don't like categories but I think that's a new one I'm willing to expand Glad to hear from Chewymusic! Where you been? We need to hear wht you've been doing. Thanks again for the kind words by everyone. I need to work on getting the drums sounding a little more in your face and breaking it down so people know there's congas being played. Then I'm going to work on building a stronger, more solid rhthym guitar playing. Overall just cleaner with giving the drummer some in the middle but it's just going to get better from here. I used to play trombone and I have a friend who plays sax, so I'm going to build a horn section to get in here too. This weekend the pawnshop search is on for a used trombone and a new mouthpiece. I'm ever learning but the goal is to put together a cd of my live sounding funk and go find people to play it live (at open mic nights around town). Thanks again for being supportive, you guys are the best.

Hey Slave!
I like this! How did you get the soundscape that you created? because its really interesting. The groove is really cool--it kinda reminds me of a cut off the Crystal Ball album! Jshua
