"Security is a big issue 4 us and we don't want 2 xpose the files 2 unauthorized use." - PeePee9 Paranoia is such a cool word. No matter what you do, there will be a way to convert the format and put it into an mp3, with or without quality loss...and y'all have never really given us GREAT quality anything, even when we were paying $100 a year for it we were getting max 128 kbps some months...it varied, I think, according to the adjustment Prince's doc made that month in his psychotropic meds. I KEED, I KEED. I'm glad that I have no fear of you releasing something as a download that I'll actually have to have with any urgency whatsoever. I AM quite excited about the new album, although it'd be kinda cool to know something about it...I'm just bitter from missing Ellen. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Gazam said: Lastly, what I'm getting is that Musicology is in reference to HOW music is created and enjoyed. And how in Prince's words (on Leno) we don't want a bunch of computer users rather than musicians (well close enough but you remember).
Now, just get the CD or LP or whatever Musicology will be made like and rip it to whatever format you like.... ...Don't obsess over the tools (computer..iPod), obsess over the music, that comes first. Ain't it ironic that in order to hear most of his music from the last few years, you almost have to be a computer programmer? It's essentially the only reason I ever learned anything on the computer...to get Prince music. Speaking of which, someone puhLEEZE tell my dumb faggot ass how to get hooked up on ABMP!! I'm a slut and I'm always VERY grateful. Oh, and my teeth come out. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

If the technology is so suffocating then I'll just wait for the CD. I can't be bothered with all this stuff and just want to listen to music fuss-free, and I am a computer programmer. Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

Well compare this to the endless number of ways software developers have tried to protect their programs from being pirated for the past couple decades...

Exactly, Tom. It's funny that he's talking about musicians not becoming computer programmers yet he's treating his songs like computer software.
Some sassy motherfucker said, "He behaves out of concordance" and I stand by that statement, yes sirree. I like his stance on computers from 2045 much better. USE that computer, Prince, it's an instrument as much as anything else...remember? You knew that back in like 1982. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

I think it's possible but difficult to stop software piracy, but as far as music goes, there's no chance. They'll never be able to stop people capturing the audio out or even putting a microphone to a speaker. Unless they get DRM technology and pump digital music directly to our brains.. microchip in yo' neck anybody? Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

I've never understood why artists who put music on the web don't simply put an audiostamp on the damn file so that people can download it, but if they try to trade or sell it, they're dealing with a track with a voiceover interrupting the music every minute or two.
Yeah, that might sound annoying, but if ya want the real deal, buy the music. Meanwhile, you have a file you can listen to that gives you a taste. Kind of a lo-tech solution, but sheesh. We're already "making do" with low-fi NPGMC downloads from previous year that I'm sure most of us would gladly replace if an official CD version w/ proper sound were released in stores or via mail order. What's the big difference?

Heyblueangel, is that the only thing the pp's could come up with for an explanation on why they are going to exclude even more fans, piss off even more other fans and send even more cease and desist letters to fans breaking their rules? You are not my "friend" because you threaten my security.

Pretty much, Abrazo...I believe that quote was in response to someone asking why they weren't releasing them in a format that is compatible with Macs....they said that the older WMA format that would play on Macs isn't secure enough but somehow this new Windows-only WMA file was uncrackable!!! And to kinda sum up their beliefs, PeePee9 uttered the above highly paranoid statement. And the sad thing is, I don't think any of them can chalk it up to cocaine or something....this is a SOBER paranoia.
However, I've heard numerous reports to the contrary (regarding the uncrackability of the format the club is set to release) in the last couple of days from people who would actually know, whereas I think the PeePees just decided to take a night class in the World Wide Web at the Chanhassen Adult Learning Annex. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Blueangel, the pp's must surely have heard numerous times that not a single copy protection measure is uncrackable and that the listener can always record an audio signal, thereby circumventing the copy protection without any specific circumvention device and opening the door to "piracy" anyway.
The problem for the good faith user however is that that is illegal. The problem for the NPGMC is that they don't care enough about that and that user rights and customer friendly service is not their priority, thereby losing more and more customers and totally missing their goal of preventing "piracy" so as to make as much money as possible. In fact, this stupidity will only lead to less and less money for the club. Plus, if they are really up to date they should also know that they do not necessarily need Windows media audio (WMA), but that the inventors of the MP3 technology (the French company Thomas) have managed to create a protection measure for MP3 files, which neither is customer friendly, but at least they won't have the problem with mac and i-pod users having to convert files etc. But alas, I bet they don't really care and that the plans are already so far worked out that there is no turning back now. Not true. A copyprotected MP3 file seizes to be a true MP3 file and as such very few, if any, players will support direct playback of these files. [This message was edited Thu Mar 4 6:34:14 2004 by m3taverse] "this especially prepared potato is called pomme de terre"

Howevertechnically it seems true that you can't call it an MP3 file anymore when it is copy protected and won't therefore play on portable mp3 players no more, but the inventor appears to have a different opinion. (this is btw pretty recent and the new technology may change very soon to make it more user friendly) You are Dutch right? Yo, Blue Angel
Could not agree more about your comment about having to be a computer programmer to get Prince's new music. He must have lost countless fans who were pissed off about what a hassle it is to hear his new music. Me, I don't even own a computer. Fortunately, some beneveolent fans burned me some cd's with most of Prince's new music on them. Otherwise I wouldn't have heard most Of Prince's new music since Rave. What happened to 1 800 new funk? Sure it was hardly hassle free but at least everyone could use it! Is anyone opposed to Prince releasing more CD's? That would be the rational solution. Give us compilation cd's rather than force us to track down hard to find songs. Seems to me that the only one happy with the NPGMC is Prince.

Someone should tell PP9 to release one song as a test. See just how long it takes before an unauthorized copy is on the net. I bet it's the same day - burn a CD, rip it back in, post it. All they are doing is reducing their potential customer base and forcing potential customers to take an illegal route to hear the music.

If you can hear it, you can record it.
If you can record it, you can make an MP3 (or Ogg!!!) out of it. There's NO way around it. It's the same with movie piracy - you can region encode DVDs and all that stuff all you want, but you can't stop a bloke sitting at the back of the theatre with a videocamera!!!

They already did those tests ... they released NEWS (before anyone had the physical cds) in its entirety through MSN, using MS WMA and DRM technologies. They probably have a pretty good idea of what to expect. "this especially prepared potato is called pomme de terre"
