I wholeheartedly disagree. I am way better than the asskissers.

Anyone who stays late to clean up after a concert, dresses up like Prince or walks around spouting off about positivity needs some fucking help.

I don't think you fit the definition, KD, and anyone who has talked to you even for a minute knows you have a good sense of balance.

To ME, an "asskisser" is someone who simply does NOT allow for any kind of criticism WHATSOEVER of ANYthing Prince has ever done.

Example: "Graffiti Bridge is brilliant, people just didn't understand it."

Well, no. No, actually it was HORRIBLE. But that's okay - what prolific artist doesn't let out a few duds? Bob Dylan was in a movie last year that got CRUCIFIED by the critics, but does that make Bob Dylan any less legendary? Of COURSE not.

I've been a Prince freak for over half my life, and I don't see myself ever not following every note of music he releases. Still, I could provide you with a significant list of songs he's done that I just Do Not Like. Does that mean I like him any less for having recorded songs I don't like? Of course not. I just don't listen to the damn songs!

And another thing about "asskissers" (and this could go for "naysayers" as well) - it's VERY important to separate the artist from the person when you invest time and energy into being the fan of someone's creative work. From everything I've seen and heard about Prince over the last couple of decades, I don't think he'd be a person I'd ever want to "hang" with. I don't vibe with the way he does business. I don't vibe with the way he treats people most of the time. But you know what? As long as he has a guitar in his hands, he can do no wrong by me. When his music hits me the right way, he could be Sadaam Hitler-Satan-Hilton for all I care, and I'd still be right there with him while the music's going on.

I think it's very possible to be critical of the people and things we love. In fact, such criticism can be part and parcel OF that love.

Furthermore, I think it's also possible to shun a certain aspect of a person or thing, and embrace other aspects. There's no law saying that our interests have to be 100%. We're not being tested on the quality of our devotion - and if we ARE being tested, I'll gladly snap my damn no.2 pencil in half.

Well, I don't know if this answered your question, but it was good to get the rant out there.
