NPGMC Music News: Huh??

September 14:
Does anybody find it interesting that one of the villians in the Color Purple was named HARPO? (OPRAH backwards... Ended up being tha name of a BILION-DOLLAR COMPANY)

Unless I've read the book and seen the movie so many times that my reality of the story has warped irrevocably, I don't think Harpo was a villain. If anything, he was kind of comic relief, a bit of a tragic character at most. If he was such a villain, what was he doing sobbing on Celie's front porch at the end of the movie?

Not getting it at all, though I have my suspicions about the subtext, and if my suspicions are correct, the subtext is deeply flawed...

Isn't Harpo owned by Oprah, and wasn't Oprah in The Color Purple?? I can't remember.

I know she was in Beloved, I thought she might have been the Color Purple.

Oprah played Sophia in "The Color Purple", and her husband was Harpo.

Maybe Oprah declined to shoot a video clip of her working out to N.E.W.S., pretending like she loves it, and now Prince is mad...

I agree. . .Harpo wasn't intended to be a villan in the movie or the book. I think someone came up with this without thinking and was trying to be clever.

I think Prince's mind is deteriorating, fast. What, did he just watch The Color Purple and take a hit off the purple rock?

Does anybody find it interesting that Shug is my favorite character in The Color Purple, and backwards her name spells Guhs, and that's pretty darned close to Gush, and if you add an "-ing" it's Gushing, as in gushing praise, the only kind of feedback Prince and the NPGMC (a MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR COMPANY) wants to hear?

Or how about the fact that Harpo is the name of a famous comedian and the NPGMC Music News is a bleeding fucking joke? Thanks for the info on Prince's music, guys - it really shows respect for his life's work. rolleyes

Basically, I think the subtext is, "for a woman who was so eager to star in a movie about wicked men, she sure didn't mind naming her multi-million dollar company after one of them."

I think it's meant to be a critical comment about a "willful woman", who, at the end of the day, gives tribute to her (fictional) husband, even though (in NPGMC's eyes) she thinks he's a "villain".

In other words, I suspect that this is another case of "man has dominion over woman" dogma, and P's post-JW pretzel philosophy (and I'm not meaning to rag on the JW faith in general, by the way - I'm questioning Prince's interpretations of it, if indeed this was the subtext of the "Harpo" post).

Thoughts?

Didn't Harpo beat his wife Sophie in the book (and in the movie)? For me then, he wasn't a crystal clear character. Maybe not necesarilly a villain, but definitely not someone to look up to.

He only beat her after Celie told him to, and even then he wasn't exactly successful, considering Sophia beat the crap out of him for even trying.

But my question is this: because The Kid hit Appolonia in Purple Rain, does that make him the villain of the movie?

HARPO is Oprah spelled backwards. It has always been the name of her company, even before she did The Color Purple.

Interesting. I'm not sure Oprah's character would have categorized Harpo himself as a villian. He was a man - albeit a less than perfect one, Its been so long since I've actually seen the movie. Didn't she get back with him eventually? The character that Danny Glover played was perhaps portrayed as more of a villian than Harpo. But the book was written by a feminist author and therefore from a feminist perspective.

Since the movie was based on the book, I'm not sure which came first - the book, or Oprah establishing her company. Could it be coincidental - or if not coincidental just a clever play on words rather than actually giving homage to the male character of the movie. Guess we'd have to ask her.

Did this become "news" because of Oprah's separation with long time mate, Stedman? Hmmm...

By the end of The Color Purple, everyone in Celie's family (including Mister, if you read the book) reunites and lives a pretty mellow, loving life by the time she's reunited with her children. I think the movie cut out a lot of the book's resolution, but I seem to remember Harpo standing on Celie's porch at the end of the movie, weeping right along with the rest of the family when Miss Celie is reunited with her children.

What? Like Harpo was one of the Marx brothers and the Marxists are Communists and Communists are bad? This is a really patriotic message from our leader. Join the NPGMC and naysayers be damned!

This statement sounds so JW. They always look for something negative in something very happy or positive. Oprah Winfrey is one of the most successful most giving celebrities.
