Splintered off from another thread...

Ok so this begs the question, if Prince's complaint is that he wasn't compensated when WEA international originally sold the cd's, is it hypocritical for Prince to have sold the cd's himself to recoup some of what he feels that he was owed?

Of course that assumes that this dispute is really more about money than quality control.

I'm sorry I can't get past the avatar... smile Umm, this is about the WEA cd's that are the source of so much drama here lately. Apparently, well read on...

Sorry 'bout that Universaluv wink

Go read the thread on the org, entitled "What Prince is Doing Does Make Sense." Here's the link:

http://www.prince.org/msg...&tid=56198

Now scroll down, and you'll see where respected, longtime members of the Prince community (both from MPLS and elsewhere) relay some very interesting information.

It seems that these very same "unauthorized" CD's that we are being asked to mail in were sold at the NPG Store in Minneapolis, and were sold at Paisley Park as recently as 2000, at the first Celebration.

For SHAME, NPGMC.

But isn't there a difference between an artist selling his own work and getting compensated for it and a company selling an artist's work without authorization by said artist and no payment to said artist?

That all depends on what you believe "The Cause" is really about.

The NPGMC's explanation of the email basically says that these releases were poor quality that misrepresents his life work. If that is truly their beef, then they shouldn't have been sold at Paisley. Right?

However, if "The Cause" is really more about Prince not being properly compensated for these releases, then who cares if they sold them at Paisley?

Now I'll be cynical here and say that "The Cause" is probably more about $$$ than quality IMHO. It doesn't sound nearly as nice to say to the fans "Help Prince get more ca$h" so they characterized it as being about preserving his life work. Ultimately the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. It'd be interesting if the club addresed it.

My understanding is that he felt the items themselves were of a substandard quality and don't meet with his approval. "Prince deserves better", as NPGMC recently said.

But don't the fans deserve better, too? Then why sell shoddy WB merchandise at the Park?

What I dont understand (and Id love somebody to explain it if they know) - how come Prince can release WB owned music on NPGMC (Horny Pony, Thieves in the Temple, The Ride Video etc etc)...surely he wouldnt beable to do that if WB hold was as evil as he makes out.

And why arent they complaining???

Yep, I bought the When Doves Cry/Purple Rain cd single in question for the price of $1 at the first Celebration. I also bought the Kiss/Girls and Boys/Under the Cherry Moon single at the garage sale.

This just proves that he is not giving us all the facts or he is the worlds biggest hypocrite. At the very least he owes us a detailed explanation devoid of Princebonics that makes some sense.

Honestly those cd singles don't sound any worse then the cd's they were originally on. I just checked and there wasn't any difference that my ears could detect.

As for the dvd...well that's another story.

Well you'd have to actually read his contract to figure out what he can and can't do with those works. Maybe there's a provision that allows him limited use of certain recordings. Maybe he's just screwin them. Unless somebody actually has his contract, I don't know how you can get an honest answer to that one.

You know, at first I didn't think I had any of these "Pharoah" items, but I DO have a couple...the "Let's Go Crazy" CD single and the "Erotic City" single - both of which I own because they're the only way I thought I could have "official" copies of these classic 12" versions.

And it's true, they sound fine to me. Better than burning them to CD from vinyl, which is the only other alternative I know of. The packaging and art design is a little silly, but whatever. Like "Crystal Ball" was a breathtaking stride in the world of art design?

Another question: did I miss something, or is the CD single for "The Future/Electric Chair" one of the items in question? I didn't notice it on the list, but it seems to be in the same "series" of import WB singles.

Not that it matters SO much to me, considering AIN'T NO WAY anyone's getting my copy of that!!!

Well, the clarification (HA!!) also mentions "showing these CD's 2 a Federal Judge," as if they are needed for evidence.

That's the explanation that many are going with on the club..people post that they sent their CD's in "as evidence that WB released them."

I wonder if this latest revelation will cause them to wonder why they would need US to send in copies when THEY were selling them for profit as much as 3 years ago. Did they mean to leave one copy of each, and just forgot?

Of course, as any rational mind knows, the whole theory about them being evidence to show "2 a federal judge" is ludicrous in a million other ways, too.

Good point. Was anyone here a member in Year 1? The mp3 of Horny Pony that was put up was in ATROCIOUS quality...it sounded like it was recorded from a used tape to MP3, all hissy and shit.

Eh, it doesn't matter anyway. The yokels at the club can't handle any proof that their little Princey is bonkers, so they're just calling the orgers who reported buying/seeing these at the celebration liars.

to that i say...i was at the first celebration..and i bought so much prince junk it was ridiculous..things i didn't need...any cd singles i could find...posters...tshirts...jerseys...

and i never saw those..i got those singles online about a year ago...
so if he says they were sold there and his report is being posted everywhere as fact then me saying i didn't see them there means...

Doesn't say that ya'll are LIARS, just that he didn't personally observe it, so the contrary story doesn't have much credibility with him.

There were hundreds of them or anything, but while I digging through the boxes of cd's I came across the WDC/PR cd and bought it. Anyone who says differently can go fuck themselves because it is the God's truth.

BUT:

Does anyone have any hard proof that these items were on sale at The Park? Receipts, actual items purchased, whatever?

And if it's true Prince sold those WEA international cd's during the 1st celebration it proves him to be a hypocrite indeed... And, as always ... I am sorry to add... it is about money and control.

hmmm

The more I think about it I can't be POSITIVE I saw these items at the park, but I'm pretty darn sure that I did. With "the garage sales" there was sooo much stuff that they'd bring out a box with just a few copies of each item and they'd be gone very quickly. So, just cause I saw 'em doesn't mean that Rio (from NPGMC) was wrong by saying he didn't see them.

In the end all, FOR ME, I think this whole fiasco has just been pathetically riduclous. Regardless of items being for sale at his stores/the park, it's still just sad.

I think I have to quit talking about it now...

Like I said I purchased my WDC/PR single during the first day of the celebration. LIke you said they were bringing up mixed boxes so fast that it's hard to say who saw what, but I am 100 percent sure that I bought it there.

I swear on my mother that I bought the WDC/PR single at the Celebration and the Kiss/Girls and Boys/Under the Cherry Moon cd at the garage sale. The WDC single is still sealed.
