My credit card number was stolen

Today I received a package in the mail of 5 hardcore pornos that I didn't order. To make a long story short, after calling the bank it was discovered that my card has been used to make a bunch of other charges totalling around $350.00.

According to my bank, one of the very last legitimate charge actually made before all the other charges started appearing was to Musictoday.com for my copy of N.E.W.S. I don't use that card for many things and so there really aren't too many places someone could have gotten my card number from, but one of the few times I've used it in recent months was to order that CD. The charges not made by me started about a week after my Musictoday purchase with the last one being made last Wednesday (when the pornos were ordered via the internet)

Obviously there is no way to know FOR SURE exactly how or where my CC number was stolen from, and there are a couple other places I'd used the card which could be where the theft originated from. But I wanted to post about this here in case anybody else out there suddenly discoveres charges to their card and who have also used Musictoday.

I understand they use a secure server to take internet orders but you never know who at the business itself might be less than scrupulous or if there are hackers that might get into a site. (I guess that's how it could be done? I really don't know much about how this sort of thing might have happened..)

It creeps me out that someone has my info and is doing this. I've never experienced this sort of situation before and so I'm sorry if I sound paranoid or anything. sad

Please note I am not saying Musictoday was where my card number was stolen from. I'm NOT saying that and I don't want to sound like I'm blaming them for this theft because I don't know how my number got stolen. It's just that they were one of the last, and one of the few, places I've used my card recently and so I thought I would make this post here in this forum just in case this happens to someone else because, if it does, it could be a situation for Musictoday to further look into.

hug hope things work out. the credit card company will probably conduct an investigation, and they are insured for theft like this. you shouldn't have to pay.

i always think about that when i use my credit card, online or not. . .

credit card #s are much more apt to get stolen by people physically handling them, than they are by online transactions. I once left my credit card on a desk for about 15 minutes where i was ordering something, only to find out a week later someone was charging all kinds of junk to my account. My credit card company investigated it and said this is a very common happening. So try to think about any places you may have used your card in person and that's probably who swiped your numbers.

hug Thanks, XxAxX. I can really use that hug today. smile

The bank said I wouldn't have to pay for any the charges except for a $50.00 fee (which still sucks but $50 is at least better than $350).

I too always think about credit card theft as a possibility when I've used the card online and otherwise and tried to be as careful as possible, but I guess sometimes things just happen. neutral

What really stinks too is that when I got the package today I was all excited because I'm waiting on receiving a copy of the Undertaker video and when I opened the package it was all this gross hardcore porn instead!

Maybe the person or place who you ordered the Undertaker video from set you up. They have your address, after all. Maybe that same place is the porno company. If someone is generally stealing your credit card number, they don't send you something too. It sounds more like some company made you buy stuff you didn't want, without your knowledge. Find out who owns the company that sent the porno and you probably found your thief.

Thanks deepabove. That's good advice. This card is mainly only used for online purchases and stuff but I suppose I might be forgetting it having been used somewhere else in the last couple months. sigh

I'm so sorry this sort of thing happened to you. Did they ever find out who the actual person was who stole your card number?

yeah, it was by someone who worked at that desk, getting paid by someone else to collect credit card numbers. The credit card company knew it was fraud because all the transactions happened without signatures. But please see my other post because I think the problem you have might be the porno company itself.

I won the Undertaker video off of Ebay and sent that person a money order for it (I haven't received that video yet..) so I don't think they could be the culprit here as they didn't get my CC number for anything.

The porno company said the porn videos were ordered off the internet last Wednesday. The other charges made were for some online dating or sex site, and I'm some other place that I'm not even sure what it is. I didn't even know about those charges until I talked to the bank after having called the porno place. The guy at the bank said I'll be getting a statement in a day or so detailing all the charges and then I'll know more for sure what the other places are.

I have to say I am puzzled by a CC thief who gets stuff delivered to your place instead of his ... that means he hasn't really gained anything - and you get free porn movies wink

lol lol

I'm sending the pornos back but if you wanna buy em, they cost 89.00 for the bunch. biggrin Porno is expensive, I guess!

It was quite a shock opening the package though, expecting to see (hopefully) my Prince video, and instead seeing titles like "16 Squirting Illustrated XXX Videos" and "XXX Superstarlets". eek

And of the 5 videotapes I got, 3 are the exact same movie. I don't get that. Whoever ordered these must really love that particular movie or something...

Yeah I know! I don't understand that either. Why send me the porn?? And what's funnier yet is the package was sent as a "rush delivery"! confuse

I won't be keeping the movies tho. $89.00 for pornography is too rich for my blood! biggrin

As I recall, when I ordered NEWS online, I the order windows was in a pop up window with the URL and status bar removed. I hate it when this happens, as I could not see if it was actually a secure connection (padlock on the status bar, and https: in the URL). Anyone else bothered by this?
