news track lengths - CD vs Download?

When news was first mentioned on NPGMC, it listed all of the tracks as being exactly 14 minutes each. Then when we all downloaded the tracks in the listening party, they all were different lengths, and I think all longer than 14 minutes. My CD arrived today, so the first thing I did was rip in AAC files in iTunes, replacing the old low bit rate mono tracks with high bit rate stereo tracks. After doing so, I noticed that the new tracks are all exactly 14 minutes.

So what happened? Were the downloaded tracks longer than 14 minutes each because the just had silence beyond the end of the track, or is there an actual difference in the music between the downloaded track and the tracks on the CD - they sound the same to me, only better quality, but I don't have the originals anymore to compare too.

Idiot! You should have kept the originals. They're "in progress" mixes as opposed to the finished product. You don't think Prince would be DUMB enough to release an album on the internet BEFORE he'd sold a single copy.

They're exactly the same, except the mp3's are 96kbps audio and have different lengths of silence at the end of each track.

The sample tracks all had the silence at the end bedcause the player on the site will loop the file, therefore the silence was to tell us that the song was over.

great - thanks - only half paid attention to the discussion of track lengths not being 14 minutes before and didn't have the originals around anymore to compare too.

Have to say that I'm enjoying N.E.W.S. here. My wife, though, who already thinks Prince is strange, isn't impressed. I think it'll be quite interesting to see what kind of reviews this gets.
