new lyrix int he VS room

New lyrix from Prince in the Vs room:

THE MOORS IN SPAIN
by Prince (incomplete)

If this great African culture were alive 2day
We’d b 400 years more advanced
From Arabia they came 2 blossom in Spain
And 2 the beat of the drum they danced

Masters of the Arts and all industry
While France, England and all Germany
Wallowed in the mire of their own bigotry
The Moors were the ones who were truly free

Civilization came 2 Europe thru the Greek
Who were simply Africans who came from the Nile
The Greeks gave it 2 Rome who lost their way home
And it stayed that way 4 quite a while

Under their own misconception of Christianity
The barbaric (?) Europeans suffered greatly
While the Catholic Church was staking it’s claim
The Moors were making great gains
Introducing strawberries, lemons and sugarcane
Algebra, chemistry from the Moors this all came
Their contributions 2 knowledge, 2 numerous 2 name
While in Europe there were no public libraries, the Moors in Spain
Had 70, 600 thousand manuscripts and 17 universities

Not hardly a prisoner in the mind of society
In the Spain the Moors were once truly free

The one who is most gifted cannot lead the way in a world that never respected authority…
The sword of the Moor would have never left its sheath if the longhaired barbarian who opposed them would have only seen
That 2 win a war against the so-called “black infidels”
Brings about a peace that cannot last
But I guess all’s well that ends well… well it ain’t over

Very Entertaining! rolleyes

Could be time for me to exit the Purple boat i think.Stuff like this is of no interest to me at all.

Why doesn't he put longhaired barbarians in quotes along with black infidels? hmm

The silly thing is that he is right on many acounts, but his way of expressing himself is too blunt.

I love his usage of the word "simply".

Life ORIGINATED in bleedin Africa, so when it comes down to it, we're ALL Africans.

I am a white African European. Let me carry the burdens of the past into the future.

Let's muddle some more and stir up more controversy in an already tense situation.

Curious about what he thinks our future is.

Marrk-

I sorta agree with you . . . I don't like this type of creative expression (but it's Prince's choice).

I don't like Avalanche (and NOT because I disagree with the sentiment) but because it's too preachy and one-sided.

This type of stuff makes me miss the anti-WB songs eek

Prince is a great musician but he's showing his ignorance writing about History.

If he's trying to express he's not the one to consider one race or the other, one culture or the other "the devil" it is ok but doing it the way he does, talking about history with places, dates, etc., in such a simple, partial, superficial way so far of being serious and scientifique rolleyes

It's sad to see this... I wish he just play good music and leave History for the experts. It would be great if he goes to University as he's showing so much interest in learning and teaching.

Prince if you ever read this, please my friend ... go on stage, grab a guitar and show us your mastership on it...I'd make a fool of myself doing that, don't you make a fool of yourself writing this... rolleyes

Smells like Rainbow Children Part II: The Clan Of The Moor.

It's ok for him to have a point, but ehm, well, I can't help
but feel that if Lauryn Hill were to re-write this it would
look like an actual 21+ years individual wrote it, instead
of a teenager.

The Greeks gave it 2 Rome who lost their way home

lol

There are some clever and interesting bits and pieces in it
but the thing as a whole feels a bit silly and well, daft.

I liked "Avalanche" though, and still think it's one of the
best songs he wrote the last decade. TRC is a very good lp
as well, but it's just that he goes overboard on the lyrics
on that one too and it makes me cringe to listen to it at
times.

But, honestly,

Rome who lost their way home

lol lol

Damn! Whatever, man...why can't he just write about stuff we could mostly all relate to instead of all of these supposed history lessons and shit?! I feel like I'm in either high school or Bible class when I read some of his recent lyrics lately. I just hope that whatever the music is to this song is so hot and bangin' that it'll make me "forget" the supposed seriousness of this crap and just have fun!

Gosh Prince aren't you intelligent and enlightened and just the brightest damn star this side of Venus. No flies on you little fella, banging the entire history of the world to rights in a few killer lines. If only I could be like you. Now that we have established that, how's about you sit down, shut your face and remind us why you're in the position you're so quick to abuse today by playing Moonbeam Levels. Or maybe even Jughead, s'long as you shut up.

Apparently, Prince has not only given up on using profanity in his songwriting, but he's given up on using metaphors as well.

Prince spoke the truth.

Further it's worth noting that he is celebrating a non-Christian civilization that promoted religious pluralism in its society, which would counter many of the charges people have made alleging that Prince has adopted a "JW or else" worldview.

I forwarded this to a friend and this was his response (I love it, but I can;t take credit for it)

"Victor gets an 'A' for history and an 'A+' for being a dumb-ass"

smile

you know, in a few RARE instances Prince has been able to make political statements without being so awkward and heavy handed, I wish he'd just stay away from this type of song writing cos it's been a LONG time since he's done this effectively.

Also, maybe this is more of a "poem" or thoughts than an actual song. At least, that's what I'm hoping. Besides, I'd rather HEAR something than read it, man. It'd be nice for more (or some at all...whichever) new music.

prince spoke the truth my ass. prince has an obvious agenda and a lot of very visible hatred toward whitey

to be honest, i'm feeling truly sorry i've lived to see THIS dawn. it's been two years since i felt like i could relax and listen to prince's stuff without dodging racial remarks, political misstatements and religious doctrine.

what on earth has happened to our hero? is he so far gone he can no longer distinguish between a 'good' jam, and crap? is he being REQUIRED to dump this shit on us? i really can't believe i lived to see this dawn. . .

Yeah, I think if this is one of his occasional "blog rants", I'm able to take what was interesting from it, shrug and move on. If he sets this to music, we're doomed.

And I dont see you debunking any of the statements as false.

"Hatred toward whitey"? LMAO Wake up. The world was NEVER "Uptown"--that was a fantasy or maybe even a hoped for utopia, but it wasn't reality.

How is this hatred? It is well documented that Europe was rescued out of the dark ages after its encounter with Islamic civilization. "Dark ages" is what all historians call it because the people living in that space and time WERE living in the dark.

And Martin Bernal's "Black Athena" quite competently documents the contributions that Africans made to the foundation of Greek civilization.

However, many people are miseducated into thinking that nowhere else, especially Africa, had anything to contribute toward civilization.

Prince's verses are just one of many attempts to correct that notion.

prince's verses are too poorly written to correct any misconceptions - except the one that he is an open-minded person, supportive of all no matter what color or heritage.

hasn't Prince been there and done it with the funky thing?, if he wants to use his music to express his point of view on waht he's been learning then whats the problem?. Surely there's enough music in your collection from Prince to keep you satisfied. This is where he's at now, deal with it or leave.

We're not talking about the funk, we're talking about lyrical proficiency. We're talking about the ability to be a good writer.

With respect I don't think a whole lot of people are just criticising his writing style, they don't want to hear the hard truths he's bringing moreso.
