radical man was wrong.

What was 'wrong' with RADICAL MAN? I thought that the beat was FONKY and FANTASTIC.
I thought that it told a coherent story with not to cumbersome lyrics.
And finally, I sort of even agreed with the politics being expressed in the song.

If you ask me, the reason that this song wasn't a radio smash was simply politics -- if Prince had released that song during his Warner years I'd wager we'd be sick of hearing it today.

Well one things for sure this website can't bitch about Prince causing divisions (and the subsequent threads) when their own insensitive, basic evaluation of the essay speaks volumes in itself.

Why not look to the Moors as a model of pluralism? A place where diverse people came together and produced a brilliant civilization? In the 1300s and 1400s... that was UNHEARD of. About as unheard of as it is today. This is the lesson I hear coming through.

Huh? What I wasn't clear enough? Has this place gone to the toilet so much that the only thing that people can understand is "fuck prince" or "prince is shit?"?

No it is we are getting sick of being told to fix what we did in the past. That was the past, forget it. But you and Princypoo can't let go of the past. There is nothing to fix. People can be diverse and produce a brillant civilization but CERTAIN people will not let go of the past and keep shoving it in our face. LET IT GO.

How historically illiterate. I mean really. Do you really believe that everything that you are doing and working with in your life came about during your life time? Stop living in that Bill Murray "Groundhog Day" fantasy bullshit that the past does not matter. How rootless.

But if you still want to promote let-it-go-ism, then do that. LET THE SHIT GO and move on. Prince did not release any music TODAY so what are you goin to listen to? Shit that came out in the past? That's the PAST. GET OVER IT and move on.

I am not living a ground hog day, I am living the real world where people don't want retoric like this SHOVED in our faces using heavyhanded tactics. I understand you want people to know that the african community (and others)is responsable for lots of wonderful things in the world I would never deny that. I just don't like having things shoved down my throat.

Okay well I appreciate your respect for history.

But aren't you being a bit melodramatic here? You're acting as though Prince walked up to you and pimpslapped you with his notebook o' rhymes.

That is how I take that writing. It is written in such a way that I feel it is slapping me. To me there could have been a better way of writing that and getting his point across.

Prince isn't writing anything for you! If you feel like he is slapping you, then walk away.

I just don't understand how people can get so worked up about some lyrics.

I think P does this stuff on purpose just to see what happens within his fanbase.

If everyone is so upset with P, then they should be upset with PE, the Jungle Brothers, NAS and many more who point out positive black history.

I just don't get it disbelief

I find "The Moors in Spain" and this whole thread very interesting.
A lot of "food for thought"...
BanishedBrian - May I ask, where did you get your "verses"?
First, I would like to say that I don't think Prince is getting hung up on the past because as JW's the past is going to be the future.
Huh? Que?
Let me explain:
According to the scriptures, the "Moors" are going to be resurrected. In fact, I think it's safe to say that Prince is looking forward to hanging with the Moors in the future.
Also, I don't believe it's "religious pluralism" that Prince is celebrating in "The Moors in Spain", but rather props to a culture which "blossomed" out of "FREEDOM".
This same kind of culture is celebrated by Prince in "The Rainbow Children" - Those today who are united by love and enjoy a "freedom" the rest of the world does not know. A group free of bigotry, free from fear of others (Xenophobia), and free of "class" distinctions.
A group which does not fall under the category of being guided by a "misconception of Christianity"...

Please see my post above to see how Moorish Spain relates to Uptown... and the lessons that history can teach us.

He's not saying YOU are a bigot for being British. Sheeesh! He is saying that bigotry was practiced at that time... and he is not specifying against whom. Feudalism bound folk to the landowners as though they were slaves. That is bigotry no?

What he IS doin is contrasting what was going on in Europe at the time with what was going on in Spain at the time under Moorish rule. There are histories of people fleeing feudal Europe to live under Moorish rule because even as a slave in North Africa they enjoyed greater rights and freedoms and lives than as serfs in feudalism.

Why not look to the Moors as a model of pluralism? A place where diverse people came together and produced a brilliant civilization? In the 1300s and 1400s... that was UNHEARD of. About as unheard of as it is today. This is the lesson I hear coming through.[/quote]

Sorry - I'd only read the short extract of the lyrics printed above (was a little naive and didn't realise there were other posts on this topic at the time!) so all the points you make above are absolutely true. I'm still disappointed by the grouping of individuals of a 'nation' (what ever that is - Germany didn't exist as a state then did it..?(not rhetorical - genuine question)) as bigots though - i'm sure that's not what Prince intended but that's how it comes across (without the music ofcourse) "wallowing" implies that the people of Europe were content with the situation - rather than just being as downtrodden as every other poor group at this time. Most people were just trying to get by with their lives - as they always have done. I guess what annoys me is the concept of "nationality" and being judged by that...

gums are flapping again eh?

Making noise just for the sake of arguing?

Just let peoples opinions be - when it comes to NPGMC there are no right and wrong answers..there cant be, not everyone gets the same treatment so u cant compare.

I for example only get about half of the email notifications soem people do, they messed up my chances of getting good gig tickets and I never received Rave in2 in the first year of the club...but then I shoudlnt complain cuz this is more than some other people have got so far.
