All Apple Users Should Boycott NPGMC Music Club. YEAH!

Why? Well, there are many reason why they should be boycotted, but what are yours? Apple users can't access the files or something?

i have tried on my mac and the website isn't friendly to mac computers. some pages don't load.

I still haven't been able to see the cyberclips or any audio/video media yet. I have the window player, as well as Real Player and all that I need. Its frustrating. I don't know why it doesn't work for me!

i think we should all barrage the so-called MUSIC club with emails and posts on the discussion board (even better), asking them to let us know if they plan on releasing some music anytime soon.
they didn't promise anything...but i mean, come on, certainly we all expect SOMEthing for our money, right? No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

I think the problem may be that some of you don't have the right codecs to make everything work. I have certain codecs disabled on purpose, but if you are having trouble with a certain media format, it could be that either your codec isn't current or you don't hve the right one installed at all. Always reboot after installing in order to get the codecs to work. http://www.apple.com/ will usually have whatever codecs you need. If the problem is that quicktime or Windoze media player won't work in your browser and you want it to, here's how you do it if you're using Internet Explorer:
Open up your browser go under edit to preferences scroll down to receiving files click the triangle and go to file helpers click add then browse, then search your drive for the Quicktime, WM player or whatever the program is that you want to add to the browser after you're done, click OK. REBOOT the computer, boot up IE and try the new setup. I'm not trying to be condescending, just helpful to those on macs who don't already know this. Peace. Oh no, if all Apple users boycott the NPGMC they may lose 7 or 8 members! Horrors! Apples only make up something like 4% of computers...they are basically irrelevant at this point, and they would not be missed at the NPGMC. I'd like to call for Commodore 64 users to boycott the NPGMC as well. Their needs are clearly not being met by Prince or Pixius. . [This message was edited Mon May 12 11:42:21 PDT 2003 by TonyC]

If the NPGMC site is not working for you at this point it's your own (or blame your Mac or internet connection if you like) fault. The site is completely built in Flash, a technology that runs just fine on Mac last time I checked ... same goes for the videoclips encoded in Real video ... there's a perfectly good Mac player to view those files. [This message was edited Thu May 8 3:09:33 PDT 2003 by TonyC] well keep using your environmentally unfriendly bill gates info-stealing machine that probably crashes every two minutes! mac still rule. Would you please elaborate on Windows XP being "environmentally unfriendly"? Windows XP is very stable and seldom crashes. At worst, if a particular program freezes up, WinXP isolates that program and doesnt take down your whole OS. Last time I checked, Mac users make up about 10% of those surfing the internet. Sorry to say but they're not going to get preference over the millions of Windows users out there. Real Player is cross compatible, I used it all the time on the Macs at school. But for NPGMC to redesign the site to be tailored for a Mac is impractical and not worth it. How is someone who insists on all their media being in Quicktime any better then someone who uses Windows Media Player all the time? Both offer versions for the opposite OS.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The difference between quicktime and WMP is quicktime always has simultanious releases for mac and windows, keeping both fully featured. Microsoft, on the other hand, keeps WMP for the mac several versions behind the windows version. The initial NPGMC 2003 compounded this problem by not posting usable WMP 7.1 files of the videos. They didn't post WMP 7.1 versions of some of them and the ones they did post were obviously not tested at all because nobody got them to work. The ironic thing here is Prince is a Mac user.
The other complaint I have made is that instead of doing propritary formats, weather it be quicktime or wmp specific, why don't they simply offer the industry standard MPEG4, which is supported by both players. And the best quote I've seen in a while was this "Windows applications don't look all that great, do they?" - Bill Gates - 2003

Same market share as Apple in the auto industry. All sarcasm aside, the real issue is that if certain parts of the club did not work or weren't tested on Macs, it would have been nice to have been notified before joining. Personally, I think Apple makes great computers. But the only problem is that Apple makes a very exclusive computer compared to the much larger "PC" market. I don't know, blame Bill Gates or something...
But I have to say that if you own an Apple in this day and age, you really are taking a gamble in the sense that sooner or later you are bound to run into some major compatibility problems. Unfortunately, the Apple consumer base just isn't large enough to force businesses to comply with every little subtle programing quirk that arises in dealing with Apple technology/programing. And it's kind of hard to blame the businesses, because I'm sure they have enough trouble just keeing up with all of the changes being driven by the much, much larger "PC" market. I would love to own an Apple, but I know that overall, it just won't be worth the headache in the long run. "You've got to believe in something... why not believe in me?"

I would love to own an Apple, but I know that overall, it just won't be worth the headache in the long run. That's why they have industry standards. If something uses industry standards (MPEG4), and it doesn't work right on the Mac, then it's Apple's fault. If they don't use industry standards, and instead use Mircrosoft proprietary technology (WMP), then it's their fault it's not working. Adding realplayer support solved teh problem, but in the process requires mac users to install another proprietary player. If they used MPEG4, then everyone could choose their own player. For the chat room - why isn't something like that done in Java? A chat room isn't that hard to do. NPGMC has the only chat room I've ever heard of that doesn't work on the Mac. People largely go with Macs because they just work better. Apple just has a commitment to excellence that is too often missing from microsoft. People largely go with windows either because they have to or because everyone else does. That's sure not how i want to live my life - just go with the masses and not think for myself. The sad thing is that far too many people really have no idea how Microsoft got to where they are. How ruthless and unethical they have been as a company. People think they innovate, when what they do is first try to kill innovation, and then try copy what they can't kill off, the try to kill it again, and then ultimately claim they invented it. I honestly can't think of a single thing they've ever really invented. And they never get their copies right the first try. They often never even get as good as what they copy and kill off. They copied basic so blatently that their version had the same bug as what they coppied, they bought DOS after they licensed it to IBM, lying to both IBM and the inventor of DOS in the process, they copied Visicalc and LisaCalc to get multiplan later Excel. They used Apple's patents to develop windows, and it still took them 3.1 tries to get something even usable, completely lying to their OS partner, IBM, in the process. They killed off many, many DOS/Windows developers through their ruthless business practices. They've blackmailed PC makers to wipe out competing OSes and competing applications. I could go on and on.

It only took one Rosa Parks to make a big statement... Equating what Rosa Parks did with the ability to enjoy Prince's website on a Mac? Ok, sure. As far as the whole Mac vs. PC thing. You guys are right, Apples are great at alot of things that Windows is merely competent at. I've been tempted to make the switch many times. But, every time I look at them, there's always been a sacrifice I had to make. I'd have to lose or wait for one program or website that I currently use that didn't have a good Mac alternative. And I've have to pay more for the sacrifice. Sure, Microsoft is the evil empire, every innovation they come up with Apple did first, etc... All that may be true, but bottom line, PC's are compatible with just about everything I need, and Apple isn't.

So are you saying that people who own Apple's never run into compatability problems? I would think it is a safe bet to say that ANYONE who owns a regular PC has far less compatability issues than Apple users. Do you game? I know for sure that Gamers run into problems.
