You should care cause if it doesn't prove profitable in the long run, well remember the Apple Newton? And what's wrong with the Newton? It was just a misunderstood pice of technology...too new for the times back then. But the bottom line is that they have done more bidness in one week then all other services combined since their inception. That's saying alot, seiing as how only Apple users can use the service right now. [This message was edited Tue May 6 17:56:26 PDT 2003 by BlackandRising]

ACC sounds better than mp3, and people are converting mp3 to ACC, what software? lol No, not everyone will use crappy ass .wav, lol what do you work for NPGMC? lol People are not "using the shit" out of itunes4. In fact, only Mac users can use it, so that alone says that a very small % of people use it. I doubt many people are converting their mp3s to ACC. And you obviously need to have new software to play ACCs...lol "crappy ass .wav" .wavs sound better than mp3s and ACCs.

Having 1 million downloads does not make this venture a success. If it can operate profitably long-term, it will be a success. It still hasn't turned a profit yet.

Dolby AAC is the audio portion of the new MPEG4 industry standard, so it intended to replace MP3. That said, it makes no sense to convert a MP3 file to AAC. However, it does make a lot of sense to rerip CDs as AAC instead of MP3s. The result is better quality at lower bitrates (less disk space, faster transfers, better streaming, etc).
True, AAC does require new software. Quicktime 6.2 on both platforms supports it, and Quicktime 6.2 is free. iTunes 4 also supports it, as will iTunes 4 for the mac. As does the #1 selling MP3 player - the iPod. Other software should support it as well - Windows Media Player supports MPEG4, so should support AAC files. I haven't tested it with that, though.
