NPGMC and MacOS X

Has anyone with a Mac been able to see any of the videos? Why did they have to go to a propritary microsoft file format where Mac support is lagging instead of using the industry standard MPEG4 file format, which is supported well on both platforms?

As far as I can tell, only 2 of the 4 videos are supposed to even work on the Mac, and have yet to even get these 2 to work. I've tried the flash version of the site on Internet Explorer and Safari. Under Safari, I can't even log in using the flash site. I've tried the HTML site, but there the videos don't even appear to offer a mac supported version.

And then there's the whole VIP room fiasco. People like me (who spent Easter with their families) didn't even see the email until after the room was closed. Of couse, there's no way to know if the streaming would have even worked with the Mac.

I,
With Safari: http://www.npgmusicclub.c.../start.php
With this address, i can log on.
But like you, impossible to see any videos.
"Reflection" is cool (but what a POOR quality!!!), but it's not big deal.

I'm running 10.2.5 and haven't been able to see the videos even with the OS X version of Windows Media Player with either Safari or IE.

I sure don't understand why they don't have the videos in the industry standard MPEG4 format. That is supported by both quicktime and windows media player.

I'm also a little dissapointed that the sight isn't as Mac-friendly as it should be. BUT, I am used it. look at all the programs and things out there that aren't mac-compatible!! It just takes a little bit longer for everyone to catch up with us I guess! I'm sure they'll have everything on quicktime soon enough. Has anyone with a Mac thought of emailing the club??

yes - I emailed the club. I waited until I verified on here that other Mac users were having the same problems.

What's dissapointing is that there are industry standard high quality formats that could have been used for the videos (MPEG4) instead of the proprietary windows media file format. Why should Mac vs. Windows support even be an issue - other than the initial implementation in year one, it's never been an issue in the past. Why are they returning to the same mistakes in year 3 that were made and then corrected in year 1?

This always happens with a lot of site makers...they always assume that EVERYONE has a what they have or what they are designing on or creating on. It's stupid really.

I use Safari, and I'll be checking out that stuff today after I join from a faster connection. I don't think that has anything to do with it but the NPGMC site is graphics heavy.

I would contact http://www.Pixius.com if you don't get a straight answer from The NPGMC.

Yeah, it's just nuts. The vids don't work at all (though I've had no problems with the streaming audio). To try to prevent unauthorized file sharing, which is absolutely futile, they make it hard for many paying members to access the site. Insanity.

GIVE UP! IF YOU POST CONTENT ON THE INTERNET, IT WILL BE ON THE FILESHARING NETWORKS ALMOST INSTANTLY! DESIGN YOUR BUSINESS MODEL TO WORK WITH THAT FACT! Geezus.

Anyway, I did email them and said the above (more politely). No response yet.

I realize that Macs are not the majority, but they are a significant minority, and it is so very, very easy to put vids up in a supported file format. There is no good reason to go with WMP 9.

Whatever. *sigh*

Mac users...I'm giving ya'lls a tip...

Do a search for this "Screenshot Movie" and see what you find...but of course, things have to work on a Mac first... doh!

I run 10.2.4 and IE and I haven't been able to see the videos. Glad (in a way) to see that the others are experiencing the same problems. I feel less left out!

I've been messing with the NPGMC club a bit. I think the problem is the FLASH files. Not memory nor processor speed, it's the Flash files.

They seem to NOT be optimized or something.

I'm running a 400 mghz TiBook with 512 RAM and although it's sort of slow compared to latest PB and other PC's, it still should run pretty fast.

Maybe it has to do with so much info flattened out for the swf files...?

The site and it's files runs much better on IE. Not Safari, it really lags, and it's using the latest Flash Plug in.

Anyone try with the other OSX browsers: OmniWeb or Camino or Netscape 7 yet?

I may try using NPGMC.com with one of those...try it and post your experiences!

Hmmm...I haven't tried accessing the site in anything other than IE and Safari. Your TiBook certainly isn't the problem. A 400 mhz G4 processor is plenty fast to browse the web, that's for sure.

I have an 867 mhz TiBook with 768 mb RAM -- I sent a very detailed e-mail to the club...I'm still waiting for a response. Here's what I sent them, though:

Hello NPGMC,

I'm a member of the club for 2003 and am having
continuing difficulties viewing the video clips in the
"cyberclips" room. I am running Mac OS X 10.2.5 and
have downloaded and installed Windows Media Player for
Mac OS X. I still get error messages when trying to
view the videos at any of the three quality levels
offered when browsing in IE 5 and Safari.

I have a broadband DSL internet connection and have
been able to view the rest of the site without
difficulty.

Additionally, I have tried accessing the site in Mac
OS 9.2 to see if the clips would play that way using
WMP 7.1. When I do that and click on a quality level
to view the videos, I get a dialog box that reads
"authentication required." I enter my username and
password for the site, but I end up with a black
screen.

Any help you could provide would be greatly
appreciated. I have communicated with other club
members who are using Mac OS X and Mac OS 9 who are
having the same problems.

Thank you very much,

Josh Norman

WatchNLearn

I use Mac OSX and have been able to logon to the system and as well navigate the site. Have not been able to view videos or participate in the Chat. (the discussion board works fine, was able to hear Reflection, and able to hear stuff from the Glam Slam Party. They really should be using Quicktime technology.

I'm sure you are all as frustrated as I am this is the email I sent 5 days ago...

I can't download the video clips ...ERROR MESSAGE ..FILE NOT FOUND
I am working on MAC 9.2 and have downloaded the 7.1 windows media player and have flash 6. To be quite honest I'm not very happy at all and very dissapointed with the lack of online help the site offers (maybe a bit too complex for people without a degree in computers?)
Anyway I'd be grateful if you could help me out in some way as I am hopeless at sorting these things out. Thanx
