Prince, thanks for the Bible verses, but...

I think you are becoming an expert in the scriptures. Thanks for all your tips in your new MUSIC CLUB membership. Me being a novice, I need some advice from you regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them.

1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord-Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual cleanliness-Lev.15:19-24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination- Lev 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality.
I don't agree. Can you settle this?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

If this thread needs to be in politics and religion, please shuffle it. I just read the verses Prince gave me as a member of his music club.

You are quoting from the Mosaic Laws of the Old Testament, Jesus came along and 'modified' those laws, most of which were made obselete when he came. Example: things in the OT that were seen as 'unclean', when Jesus came, he said the only unclean things were those things that came out of the mouth of a man.

Simply reading the bible isnt enough. The next step is to consider the context in which many of those passages were written, as well as the way your particular copy of the bible has been translated from its original form(s). It's pretty alarming how much ignorance and human agenda has altered The Word.

"`How can you say, "We [the Jews] are wise, for we have the law of the LORD," when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely?' (From the NIV Bible, Jeremiah 8:8)"

Dear Dr. Laura,
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's law. I have learned a great deal from you, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

I will address Mr. Moore's questions in
the same spirit in which they were asked, I hope.

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. How should I deal with this?

Your neighbors never barbeque? I guess you will have to
have your cook-outs at the park.

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as it suggests in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

This was not slavery as we know of it today...it was more like
allowing your daughter to get a job outside the home which
was rarely done unless a family came into poverty. The person
never became the "property" of the hirer and had to be returned
to the family according to the law when certain stipulations
were met. The person accepting the individual as worker was
seen as redeeming his brother from poverty.

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

This woman is you wife, of course. She'll let you know.
"most women?" you missed a very important part of the law.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this (sorry i erased a little by mistake here)...

Again, this practice is described in detail in the Bible.
We should have such good jobs and be treated so well. Unless
you are self-employed then you are in a much worse slave-type
position of your own volition.

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

Unless your neigbor entered the law covenant at Mt Sinai
he does not have to worry. Work on!

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 10:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

Again, unless your friend entered that agreement of the
Mosaic Law Covenant, he can eat until he passes out, then wake
up and eat some more.

Lev. 20:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Only priests could approach the altar...and as long as the priest could see where he was going
he was safe...now if he started knocking over thet Ark of
the Covenant and stuff, that's different...Time to retire.

All the scriptural references Mr. Moore made are from the law that
was incumbent upon the Jews. The Jews entered this covenant
willingly and did a very poor job of living up to it...but
forgiveness was built into it. Check it out.

But here is the main point that Mr. Moore is missing...
No one living today is bound by the law covenant.
Jesus sacrificed his own life and said that there would be no
further need for animal sacrifices as they were simply object
lessons leading to the real sacrifice.
Jesus insituted a NEW COVENANT which can be found in the
Christian Greek scriptures. This is the one for the nations
today.
It says nothing of all that Mr. Moore mentioned. He attacks
what he does not understand.
Remember, there were no Christians before Christ because
there was no Christ to follow until he was born and grew
up to start his preaching campaign.
And though Jesus spoke the truth, even concerning a final destruction,
he still kept his message positive.

"Come to me all that are burdened and you will find
refreshment for your souls for my yoke is easy and my load is light"...Jesus

Melody, I pretty much agree with your overall assesment. The tone of "jthad1129's" post indicates that his mind is closed and his heart is hardened. But with that being said, there is one comment to which does bring into question the relevance of the Law of Moses and the various laws as discussed in Leviticus.

While it is true that there were no Christians prior to Christ. Jesus himself said in Matthew 5:17

"Think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets, I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill"

When Jesus speaks of "The Law" he is referering to The Law of Moses. That being said, it makes it difficult to discount anything in the Old Testament. Wouldn't you agree?

You can assess the post but please leave my mind and heart out of your comments. My mind is spred wide open and my heart is even bigger, pumping, love and diversity. Just found it strange having the verses pop up while i was probing around a MUSIC club site. Thats all

i was expecting MORE in the way of bible verses. was afraid there'd be pop-up preachers or something but the chapel is neat, imo. just a different area of the site, very tactfully included without any hard-sell.

it is odd on a music site but then again this is prince. . ..

Well I'm glad to hear that your mind and your heart is open. But, honestly, the post just doesn't sound that way. In my opinion, the post seeks to make a mockery of God's word. And realizing there are millions upon millions of people who believe in God and his word, it would seem to me that such a post is from someone with a closed heart and mind.

God's word is always open to interpretation but never a mockery. As a gay man living in 2003 and having had the Rainbow Children and God's word thrown at me in such a way, maybe Prince and his music and his flock would better be heard in the four walls of a church setting. Maybe he is more like President Bush and is involved in a new recruitment phase of his life.

I thought your post was hilarious. I wouldn't worry too much about people taking swipes at you, given the sensitive nature of the subject you chose to poke fun at. I'm sure you expected as much.

Sensual's more open minded than you might think, and certainly educated and passionate about the subject matter. The other person I don't know...

I must admit, I am a tad troubled by the idea of my Membership money going towards religous contributions - one of the (many) reasons I haven't joined up this year...

Hey herb4, the first thing I thought when I saw the word "donation" was a religious thing, but judging by the many problems the new site is having, I would like to think the money is to help keep the site going. I hope. I hope.
