Community In Development! HELLO! EVERYONE!
It's been a while, since I have commented/created/etc here on the org. and I just want to say...I miss the variation of perspective that comes here. While stalking here late last night, I was reminded, of how it was when I first joined here. NO, I was not in some purple vault, or box, being TOLD to quiet UP and not come here again. Haha...I'm a free man, I do as I please, and I just wanted to share my thoughts on 'community' here in this thread.
I came here almost religiously, from the moment I decided to officially join! You'll be surprised how many people..Stalk this place in the genesis of our Prince journey. I am not the only one! Haha...It's like the perfect place to get information from Prince; since he doesn't have any Public/Official websites. Without an official website, YouTube, Twitter, etc..THIS and Dr Funkenberry's site, is about the only mediums you'll find. What makes this site good is also the diverse COMMUNITY of people. NOW, as we see sites arising dedicated to 'Fams/Purple People/ we can now indulge in a sense of friendship with each other. The Org, has been the longest lasting site, not shut down like its opponents, and because of that; I along with many can come here and get useful information.
Unlike many who complain about this site, concerning the negativity that exists...I somehow bypassed what annoyed me, and enjoyed the community that existed. I've met some wonderful people here, and that really felt good. Even the constant naysayers, they somehow always made me laugh, because they fulfilled their own 'Role' I assume? Haha I still have contact with many of you here, and that's always a good thing!
Everyone has their own perspective, and no matter whether you are a fan or not. WE all come here for Prince, and that is what makes us the same in that perspective. We like him proclaim "I AM HERE, BUT WHERE ARE YOU?"
After; I went to see Prince, and such...The 'Community' has really extended itself, outside the four walls of the ORG. Being at one time where I only knew this place for information, NOW it's not about, necessarily obtaining information for me...since I know a lot of the things before hand.I'll be willing to share those things, I can, for those who will are interested in what's next. I stopped really commenting, because I wanted a more active community elsewhere.
AND, while I don't have a problem here..I am abbreviating my social sites by a great deal. I just turned 21 May 20th, and a lot has changed for me personally. It seems; social media has become pregnant each second, birthing out all of these sites to keep us connected on the internet.
I don't have the time to just spend hours upon hours on a site. I use to spend HOURS, on the org. I can't blame the org, but MY time and what I chose to do with it. I was literally addicted here, whether I commented or not. (Which sharpen my purple politics, I might add.. ) However, it took out some much needed time other places, SO I decided to minimize myself here, and combine my 'Community' through Facebook and Twitter. I have joined various Prince groups there, as it is easier to share, communicate, and build relationship. I realize not many here, have a Facebook and rather private avatars, with not so many people in your business. Haha
I miss coming here, and occasionally I read through the threads, and it's nice to see a lot of you still around.
I've been in communication about community very earnestly, these past weeks! Discussing a place/ideas, for Prince fans to share love, discussion, or simply all things related to his work. My question for you all here is, what do you aim for in a community? I was not around during the NPGMC days, but I have heard it was somehow centered on discussion, and a lot of you still remain connected to some people.
We know that Prince, has opened himself UP many times during the NPGMC days, or even when he opened up Paisley Park. He is obviously aware of relationship that can be established, he really just desires respect and not so much focus; on what he use to do and such.
Do you believe Prince will benefit from a YouTube, and if so explain why?
DO you believe he needs to arrange forums and such on Prince2013, without a membership required? Explain Why...
I can tell you; Prince is concerned about his legacy, and he is not some ruthless man, stripped from integrity. It's easy to think Prince is this and that, but once you realize..he's being true to his testament for years..You begin to understand some actions..Whether you agree with it or not, You got to really respect his 'Rebellion' against the normalcy of things, or just get too annoyed with it, and leave it all together.
The truth is, when you tell him to walk a straight line, he'll put on crooked shoes, and to be honest..I know he ain't the only one? LOL..
That doesn't give him license to just go crazy on everything, but it does graduate our role...In terms of respecting and doing what we can with the effect, of his CAUSE.
ANYWAYS...the goal of this thread is to ask those of you here, who are active or simply just looking through...IF you have any goals at all, what steps do you believe are needed?
I am sure many are comfortable with simply coming around, every once in a while, and you all just want music, and live performances. We all want Prince to perform near us, but when he is not on the road near us, or releasing new material. For those who like connection, what connection do you think will benefit him?
ONE A SIDE NOTEL I am not saying, we all just need to come together and hold hands while singing RESOLUTION in a field of purple flowers, just smiling and jumping, because we all are connected through Prince. -__- that's not my goal, to make everyone the best of friends, because some people rather stay to themseleves, but since the start of this year you can see we are more connected as a group of fans for the first time a in a while.
DO you think a progression is needed?
Much love everyone! [Edited 1/7/14 15:37pm] It's Button Therapy, Baby!

As a whole I think he's making a huge mistake not utilizing every corner of the internet to the maximum. After all of the failed attempts at a pay site I think the only route left for him is a free one unless he went all out from day one with available materials for download.
My suggestion for him would be to channel the resources he's wasting by trying to eliminate all traces of himself on the internet and channel it into a definitive online presence once and for all. Issue the stuff yourself and we won't go looking for it elsewhere!

I don't feel the need to come together and hold hands while singing Resolution in a field of purple flowers, but in a way... I wish it could be a little bit more like that. The sometimes extreme negativity of a few people bothers me - and often takes away most the enthusiasm I initially had (before I came online). A while ago, I joined a forum dedicated to another artist - and even though it's not as big and about half the people there are over 55 - I loved the general atmosphere over there so much... They are positive but no ass-kissers and there's also nobody who consistently comments to criticize the music/the person/the latest addition to the band/etc... Anyway, I have a feeling I just have to get used to it here... and I'm still trying. Messageboards on an offical website (without paying membership) would be nice, but probably pretty hard to monitor (since many overactive moderators might find it hard to balance between avoiding extreme negativity and extreme censorship). What I think would be nice -although not necessary for me- is if Prince had some kind of official online presence... Just a site listing all announced tour dates and perhaps a section for news/announcements... Nothing too fancy, just basics. [Edited 5/23/13 2:55am]

Okay, Jester, so you made it to a Prince concert for free, good for you, don't get me wrong, I ain't jealous, I saw him 23 times & I don't mind paying (but not $277) But what exactly is your point here?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I think there's always a progression. Prince, just like the rest of us, evolves. Tastes Evolve, views, evolve, so the individual is in a constant state of growth. We're taking in information so much more rapidly in today's "connected" world than before, so there's so much to take in, but we all are developing still. Prince is still trying new things as part of his own personal growth. He's evolving. Many people miss the music or at least the "sound" he had in the past, but we still find gems in his latest art that can be appreciated.
I don't think there's much we can ask or request of him to do. He's a free spirit, doing what he does, what he does best: entertain. He can't please everyone but nobody can, really. I enjoy coming here to read people's postings because its entertainment and sometimes informative. There will always be people who come here to be negative for negativity's sake. There will also be many more who come here for good conversations about an artist we all have in common. [Edited 5/22/13 15:07pm]

hey, I still love your positivity dude. O.K. it's hard to figure out what you are actually asking though. Look, you say he respects his legacy etc...so why does he not do anything about it?..cut a deal with WB & do the remasters etc.
If cares about his legacy why does he treat the brilliant people who helped him create it like shit [please do not deny this!]
Why does he whine about freedom when he has actually had freedom for so long and not achieved anywhere like the success he had under WB both commercially and without a doubt creatively.
If he wants 'resolution' WITH FANS WHY TOO HE HE TREAT THEM LIKE CRAP? i.e. shutting down fan sites, sueing fans etc.
Youtube? - come on son it ain't even a question is it. Everyone is on there as well as twitter, face book etc. If you, on his behalf really have to ask the question then he has NO place in the modern world..is he really that thick?
Arrange forums?..why?..he doesn't listen..he knows full well what we want which he either won't for the legacy stuff or can't for new/future creative stuff. He will use forums for more irrational, physco religious bleatings as he did at PPark with LG. P could NEVER have anything close to the org..if he wants to engage and discuss all he has to do is ask the org and get it going-it is as simple as that.
I could go on but my only word of advice to you is to tread carefully and do not fall under his spell, fact is that once you have outlived your use or he just gets bored you wll be cast aside like he has done with many before you.
Keep positive at least for me because right now virtually ALL my faith in him is lost.

Heck, yes, Prince would benefit from Youtube!!! I don't think he realizes that there are tons of kids who don't even know who he is! He wants to talk about "real music," and this and that...apparently loves being around young people now...there are a whole group of young people who are oblvious to what "real music" is.
My kids are in their teens and have come to me asking for certain Prince songs because they liked them and wanted to show their friends, but couldn't find them on YT. Face it, that's where most young people go to hear music. I just read an article in Bloomberg magazine, stating the obvious...traditional radio is dead. Youtube is the new radio. I think Prince should have his own channel and put all his officially released videos on there, concerts, rehearsals, whatever. Fans want that, and people curious about him would then become new fans just from seeing his amazing body of work.
The days of a paying website are over. You are not going to broaden your fan base by asking people to pay for it. Only diehards are going to do that (maybe). Personally, I say no to forums on any Prince endorsed site because there would be too much censorship. What would be nice though, is if he could put out a personal note to fans every now and then on whatever site he has. Fans eat that stuff up!!!
No fan group is ever going to be harmonious. Basically that is humanity. We don't get along. We hate each other. It takes personal growth for one person not be a jerk to everyone else. Not everyone will achieve that in life.

Bless you for being too young to see he doesn't give a flying fuck about us...
Much of what you suggested he's already tried and was a complete failure.
The npgmc was Ok for a while but like everything he does, he gets bored and before you know it, it gets shut down. The forums on ngpmc were just lol, so many tool's kissing arse or fighting, moderators thinking they were god, it was a huge fail fest but fun to watch, one thing for sure official forums were a fail because of over censorship.
All he needs a solid website to sell music and videos which stays open for years with good customer care lol. Never gonna happen though.
The best we can hope is Ben pulls his finger out and updates the org to some modern software that works on mobile etc because the org will always be the main place for fans.

....and if/when this happens, ask yourself, what did you gain and what did you lose (I suspect you'll gain more than you lose, but if not the case...just keep it moving.) You're smart enough to know, your life didn't begin with *Prince* and more than likely, won't end with *Prince*(meaning not having a connection with Prince himself)....besides, I don't even get this "USE" thing.

I'll just say this once once and for all, to save YOU all from further reading my words, sentences, and stories, here. (I admit I did indeed rant while reading back..lol) TO confirm what Pueroda has wisely addressed, MY life nor anyone's life has begun with Prince. I've already gained a lot through my journey here, as with Life, you can benefit from a moment. (No matter how long the 'Moment' lasts.
A wise man once told me; "You know what you're doing? You're creating memories...Make them good ones"
Now if you choose to consume your life on the moments of arguments and negativity, this is your prerogative, but I choose to not follow suit.
I don't live for a moment to speak to Prince or experience some purple HIGH in repetition. I am living in my own realm of alphabet improvisation. Prince is only an artist, and granted he has changed and impacted my life through his MUSIC, but hey..SO did the old woman who spoke to me when I was 11; She changed my life as well. We are all here to heal and encourage each other. Music is one of those life changing experiences, and an artist like Prince has given himself to this.
Much has already been established throughout the years, and I suppose I just wanted a broader perspective one last time. I've admittedly grown out of the org, but that doesn't excuse my conversation about COMMUNITY. (Nor my lonnngggg rant about various topics..lol) I just wondered about your idea of expanding the community.
We can all look to this, and that....BUT check out your login history, You are here for something. Nevertheless, thanks for your reading and time! It's Button Therapy, Baby!

Maybe you are talking about creating a new or better fan site or fan experience, like NPGMC or using other social media? Anyway, to address some other posts on this thread, I think part of his "appeal" or "brand" is the inaccessibility, mystique. He shouldn't be on twitter nor should he put everything including the vault online for free, or even on a paying website. How many times have we spent a day or few days gorging on one artist via the Internet, and then never really go back to it? Example: when that Runaways movie came out, I obsessively looked at everything about the Runaways via Internet - every video, live footage, Wikipedia pages about the group and members, even '90s TV interviews with Joan Jett. I wasted many hours doing that, for fun, and then it was done. I had enough of them. And I never bought anything, either! I put them on my Spotify list, that's it. So I don't see how an inundation of easy info and material really benefits the artist. I know that the culture is different now and we don't have Rock Stars of the days of old - now we like to feel that celebrities are one of us, we know what they ate for breakfast, and even communicate with them through tweets and stuff, but I like that he's not like that. I think somehow he should work out something so that his previously released material is readily available, including his download releases (NPGMC) and out of print stuff. His future releases should be readily accessible too. And definitely a basic website about himself listing and pointing to (or selling) his official releases. But as much as I want it hear and see everything, including the vault, I really think he shouldn't release it all. Maybe save it for special compilations and packages to keep his legacy going after he's gone, but not while alive and still evolving and making new music. As for the fan community, the recent LOL concert I went to, there was fighting before the concert even started! There was a guy texting on his phone that it was mistake and a waste of money and some other fans saw it and started yelling at him that the concert hasn't even started yet, how can you already say it was bad? Totally reminded me of the arguing I see here. Also, that was a really eclectic bunch of people at the concert. Usually, an artist attracts a certain type; with Prince the fans are as eclectic and varied as his music. So I don't know about developing a community. But I do appreciate that this is not an artist controlled fan site, so there are critical voices here. I dont like unsubstantiated statements (i.e., rumors/fan fiction) put forward as facts, and wish it were more civil too - but hey, it's the Internet, what can you do?

Great post. The culture of easy and often cheap information that the internet has created is not for someone like Prince. I am glad that Prince retains his mystique even now. Bowie is also proving that it's possible to preserve the magic even in the internet age. [Edited 5/23/13 3:15am]

First I will say there are some great people in this community but there's also a small cancer cell of members who hurt the community. Allegedly Prince is the man behind the curtain, scheming and running his team like a multi-level marketing business. This is his biggest fan community but they're spreading out all over various social networking sites. I think the point of this thread is for Eyejester (and Prince) to find out what fans think and if he'll be able to steer members of this fan community over to his Prince2013 or some other official Prince website where there is only "Love4OneAnother" since Prince must think another Community better than prince.org needs to be developed. He allegedly leads a cult and wants certain fans to help him develop a bigger cult following. If this is true and I do think it is true, I'm only here to let him and his people know how much I oppose of the way he allows his “Fams/Purple People/” to promote him. It's very negative. I won't sit back and keep watching him and his people recruit fans like Shelbey and now Eyejester so they can become replacements for those who previously did his dirty work and are no longer a part of his organization. When certain people were a part of his staff they did irrevocable damage on this site and other social networking sites. Eyejester should be made aware of this and I hope he does tread carefully and doesn't fall under his spell. EyeJester said he can tell us Prince is concerned about his legacy and he's not some ruthless man, stripped from integrity but I'll believe it when I see otherwise since his actions speak louder than any megaphone. * I know artists have always used models and fans but it seems like Prince still feels the need to objectify women, use certain fans as tools, and treat them badly when his fans are the ones who help him pay his bills. He has been late a few times with paying his taxes so I think his fan base could be slowly diminishing. He has a history of insulting and taunting people/fans in his music (Billy Jack Bitch, No More Candy, Box of Chocolates, etc) and I still don’t understand why he can't simply release music and allow the fans to enjoy it instead of always playing games and making things difficult. He must always be so secretive and deceiving to try to build up excitement for his new releases. For every new release his people use his personal relationships to promote his music. Maybe they think his personal life is more interesting than his music and this is why certain fans keep bringing it up and discuss it ad nauseam. Someone on his promo team should let him know the pimp daddy image doesn't look good on him and as his protégé list keeps getting longer and he keeps walking with the cane, it makes him look more and more suspect. No matter what anyone says there's a pattern of new "Fams" being chosen by Prince. After the fans get inducted into his...organization they are given free reign to praise him for things as ridiculous as his "mystique" which only reveals Prince has been trying to hide something he hasn't wanted people to know for a very long time, they encourage gossip, and some even speak on his behalf. * He takes the mystique thing way too far. Too much mystery can cause problems and by Prince just sitting back “laying in the cut”, he's created a problem. It became apparent to me that there is indeed “so many variations from the conscious of one” speaking for Prince and his foot soldiers work hard getting all of his messages out there. EyeJester is his latest recruit...actually "the GIRL” is his latest but Eyejester seems to be his new voice of reason. I personally think Eyejester is more enjoyable to listen to than drfunkenberry but still find it creepy the way Prince uses his fans to speak for him. He probably sees it as using them to promote him and no matter what they do or say (good or bad) he's still getting promotion and I'm sure Prince believes even if he loses he wins as he said in one of his recent releases. * I think progression is needed but before there is progression, Prince needs to first take responsibility for the negativity he intiates and apologize for it. Some members, including the OP need to take off the purple blinders and stop trying to be obscure like Prince with rants about community development and telling people to check out their login history. I know I've logged in many time but unlike the OP who admits he was "literally addicted", "obsessed", and "came here religiously and stalked this place", I'm here because I am very angry with Prince and his people and I know the best way I could currently reach Prince is by joining his fan community, get MY message to him, and allow his fan community to bear witness. The OP posted the big picture of Prince holding the megaphone so I guess this Community In Development thread is just Jester being the human megaphone for what Prince wants to say but doesn't have to because he can get fans like him to rant for him. For those who don't get this "USE" thing, this thread is a good example of how fans, of their own free will become tools and 'megaphones' for him. Prince doesn't see anything wrong with how he and his people take advantage of obsessed fans who stalk this site like Eyejester admitted he used to do. I hope the OP and a few others realize Prince is the one who actually starts and encourages mystery, confusion, negativity and bickering in the Community. He is not straightforward about anything and everything must be a secret with him. I don't care how much "Love4OneAnother" verbiage him and his people spill. I feel it's only for promotional purposes and to try to make Prince look like he's a nice person but his actions always prove otherwise. Members of this community need to realize this and simply ignore members they disagree with instead of making assumptions about things they have no idea about. If they don't come to the realization there won't be much progression but there will be less members in this Prince fan Community. *Yeah Eyejester it could all be "jiving" and "fun" for Prince and it obviously is but IF HE DOESN'T ALREADY KNOW, HE NEEDS TO KNOW THERE ARE SOME MEMBERS IN THE PRINCE COMMUNITY WHO HAVE REPRESENTED HIM AND THEY ARE CORRUPT. I don't know if Prince still has these people representing him since I know he had to make some staff changes over the last few years but if he's still using the same promotional tactics, and it appears he is still doing the same with new fans, I advise him to stop before he ruins his legacy he's supposedly concerned about. * When I first noticed Eyejester last year on this site he seemed like an obsessed but articulate, personable, nice young man who said and did all the right things to get Prince's people to contact him. Eventually they did contact him (it didn't really take very long, did it?) and he's now fulfilling his role, I assume. I'm not stating Prince is in fact leading a cult and wants his chosen members to help him further develop his cult but I will say after reading this thread, Eyejester comes off as confusing, mysterious, and like he's now here as a foot soldier doing market research and development for Prince. Instead of using his fans to handle his business I think Prince should pay a professional publicist like I should probably pay my attorney instead of coming to his fan Community to give him a chance to apologize and clean up his act before a Judge makes him clean it up. It's obvious I really don't want to formally press charges on Prince or any of his Fams/Purple people but I will if he gives me no other choice. Until I get an apology from him I will be all over the internet and in every Prince fan Community like a next-door neighbor raising hell with my volume up full blast. Whoever has a "problem" with me will need to get over it like some fans think I'm suppose to just get over what Prince and his "Fams/Purple People/" did to me. * Lastly, if certain fans in this community such as 2elijah and 1725topp can post long essays I can too. Every member has the choice to read or not read, to reply or not reply. I'm not even looking for any replies to anything I post. I only want to make sure Prince is aware of everything I post. After reading the OP's rant and seeing the big picture of Prince with the megaphone I'm sure he's aware. [Edited 5/23/13 11:47am]

Wow, very interesting reading today. I think we need a site like this, where we can all voice our opinions openly, as opposed to an artist run site where our words would be filtered to the point where the message(s) get lost, or deleted altogether because the expression voiced is completely negative or hurtful to the artist. I appreciate the .org as it is. I don't think it's a good idea for everyone here to make a mass exodus to a Prince run site for the reasons stated.

The org is not going anywhere (I guess), everyone is free to stay here. Eyejester was only entertaining thoughts/ideas from those that would be interested in a fan site/community that offers firsthand information, (opposed to rumors, speculations, gossip...as such) and maybe other things. The good thing is, there is no obligation/committment on anyone's part to be a part of this "Community". If there is a trust issue with Prince, or feel he would be too controlling, or even feel the Community will be shortlived-look away...for me, it's just that simple. This is how I see it, maybe Eyejester can come back and be a little more specific.

The org. is the .org. and we should leave it like this. The longest and stil existing place for Prince fans of all kind. I have to admit i don`t want another Prince controlled site as we saw it has no continuity...NPGMC, Lotusflow3r The social networks...facebook, twitter offer now many small communities and you get many news messages and you are always up to date....which adds to the org. Dr.Funkenberry is there too.... Of course like everybody knows Prince would benefit from a official site but he simply can`t do it right... What is with Prince2013.com? still the screwdriver vid from months ago? 3rdeyegirl.com?No updates? Some videos appear there, some not...no news on the billboard thing...
The good thing is now that with the internet you don`t need the artist to get all the news because they spread by themself...
The casual fan is sometimes a bit lost ...met many people in line waiting for the3rdeyegirl show that had no real idea of his new projects...

I'd rather some of the people who are posting in this thread, starting with the OP, stopped trying to be mysterious. This isn't a private affair, if you post in a public thread, make it comprehensible for the people who are reading it. I don't think it's a good idea to be the carrier of obscure Prince projects or to write hidden messages and accusations to Prince here.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
It's funny how every fan who gets involved with Prince one way or another starts writing and acting so mysteriously. Suddenly the ability to write straight forward texts is gone. Is it due to the man himself wanting it that way or people getting bedazzled by his purple magic? Is it some "I've met and worked with Prince and now I have to be like him"-syndrome? Or perhaps it's P's personal opinion voiced through his messengers?

I like you Jester but I dont think a progression is needed in terms of a new website. A community? Sure. But I dont see how thats going to happen unless Prince can attract new fans. Not only that but there are only a select thousand out of a million who take the time to come to the org. I know people who are major fans but who dont actively post on the org be ause they think people here are nuts. I cant blame them for that. Keep up the positivity my friend. Let love breed love
