I'd value iTunes downloads at more than a couple of bucks per album. I'm buying more than just the album, I'm buying the capability of downloading it to my Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV as many times as I want.

That's right, I don't understand why people think something has no value because you can't hold it. The music took the same amount of time to create whatever medium it's on. A download should cost less than a physical CD but not ridiculously so. I think $0.80 for a single track with a discount for downloading an entire album. Say $8 for a 12 track album instead of 12 * $0.80 for downloading individually seems about right.
To think of an album costing $2 is ridiculous. RIP

Right on! I agree there, although I would prefer to buy the hard copy anyday given a choice.
In Australia I can't justify buying from itunes as an album costs almost the same as a CD here.
Hopefully Prince gets great worldwide distribution and can get the Montreux concerts out in full quality formats as well any new music coming our way in 2013.. \m/ Ishan Cooper - #BATFUNKCRAZY LP out now.. in 3D!!! https://ishancooper.bandcamp.com PURE UNCUT FUNK FROM DOWNUNDER \m/

Exactly! It makes me wonder how long some been fans. Its been his promotional brand 4 decades...He is one of the only artist 2 b recognizable from a unique symbol.
Why Prince uses a symbol still? will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

I have so much hope for this site. I hope he makes it all it can be. Love the start and the looks of more videos. NPGMC might not have been what he wanted but it was pretty darn close to perfect for us in many ways. 1st come tickets, "free" music, "free" albums, store front to buy some cool stuff and lots of fan interaction. Some good times where had there. Let's hope this site will offer more like NPGMC and not lack what Lotus did.

Back in the day, when vinyl & cassette were the most common ways of purchasing music, the average price for a new album was $8-$10. It was known in the industry that most of the cost went to pay for the medium: manufacturing the records or cassettes and duplicating the music to them. At the time, reports were that the actual music cost $1-$2 and the rest went to the medium.
When CDs came out, it was stated how much cheaper it was to manufacture CDs than LPs & cassettes. But, then people asked, why has the price jumped from the $10 range up to $15? The industry explained that although CDs were cheaper to manufacture, because they were a new technology, it would be a few years before this was realized. After all, new manufacturing plants had to be built to meet the demand of the new format and therefor consumers would not see a drop in price until things stabilized and the CD became the format of choice. The prices NEVER came down, until:
The industry claimed digital piracy was eating their profits for a good five years before the average price of new CDs came down to $10-$12 range. Now, as more people move to digital and fewer CDs are selling, it make sense that the price has to be maintained at that point to continue to be profitable.
Interestingly, the advent of purchasing digital music has stuck to that price point WITHOUT physical manufacturing costs. Therefore, I did not pull the $2 amount out of my ass. For an artist to sell digital music with NO manufacturing cost, NO record label collecting their cut, and NO distribution charges, $2 is fair.
And don't even get me started on "The Cloud". What if Prince pulls a George Lucas when remastering his albums and makes changes that you don't like. Which version of Erotic City would you want to hear, the original or the Special Edition New Remaster Version? Guess which version will be available to you in "The Cloud". Probably the new "approved" one. Good luck with your collection then.
All that said, I'll buy his music no matter how he sells it. But, I'll pay alot more for a physical copy that is on my shelf than for a digital copy that "disappears in a day", or whatever that lyric was from F.U.N.K.

I'm pretty sure the Montreaux clip doesn't mention a DVD. If we get a Blu-Ray or DVD great, but I'm not expecting anything more than a download at the moment. RIP

This is truly one of the best posts I've seen here in a long while. This is spot on in every way... and you even bash "the cloud" a bit, which I'm all for. Although I've spent most of my life in pro audio and music industry, I'm now in the IT world, and the public cloud is something I advise against on a regular basis. There is no guarantee of security, and the data is spread all over the globe, so to speak.
Now back to physical media... The industry lied to the mainstream in two significant ways, with regard to CDs. They claimed that CDs were better quality than vinyl, and also that they would "last forever". We know that vinyl is far superior sound quality and we also know that CDs certainly don't last forever.
Your observations on cost/sell price/margin are very accurate.
Now I will restate what I've said in other recent posts... I will only listen to mp3s for reference purposes only... for other artists music, that would be to check something out to determine if I want to buy it.
Prince may be the only artist presently that I would buy any (and every) album he releases without hearing anything ahead. I've always liked all musical sides of Prince. I enjoy the punkish style of "Screwdriver" as much as like the album 'N.E.W.S.'

As I said before, you don't have to buy the bootleg. It's available FOR FREE on the internet as a download. It would be against the rules of prince.org to tell you WHERE, but it's out there for months like a lot of other very good bootlegs. The times are over where you have to pay for these goodies.
That said, I want to make clear that I always buy every single official prince release at least once. Most of the time I'll buy more than one copy. So if prince wants my money, he should release more new stuff and his vault-treasures.

The Montreux teaser is interesting... Surely, he must know that this footage is out there already - Is he 'testing' us, to see if we're willing to buy something that some of us have already gotten hold of illegally?
I know I would. | |

I may be saying what's already been said but I ♥ Screwdriver. I don't know why people are complaining/upset about the site URL... I was able to memorize it as soon as I saw it but hey, maybe that's just me. Either way, this is my first time posting on here and I'm pretty excited to be apart of a community that enjoys Prince, for the most part anyway "Paint a perfect picture, bring to life the vision in ones mind..."

That's a good one. It's actually one of the few Prince performances I saw at a big screen in a rented cinema. It held up big time and was really fun to watch.
I would buy this in a heartbeat when it is released (preferably uncut and unchanged).
